New Mom Secrets: I Let My Baby Wear a Dirty Diaper

don't change dirty diaperIt's hard being a new mom (or even an experienced mom to a new baby) and sometimes we do things we know we shouldn't, despite what all the experts say. But this is a safe place to share your secrets—we won't tell.

This Week's Secret:

"I don't change my baby's diaper during the night—I'm too tired. In the morning it's always filled with pee or poop, or both. He's getting an awful diaper rash, but I lied to the pediatrician saying I didn't know why his bum was all red. Sometimes if he cries a lot, my boyfriend will change his diaper while I pretend to be asleep." —anonymous

Is it okay to let your baby sleep in a soiled diaper at night so you can catch some zzz's?

You're baby would probably be a lot happier if his bottom wasn't in so much pain! I say shame on you, number one priority when you become mom is BABY! I know we need our sleep, I completely understand that! But this is really neglectful and will eventually catch up with you, Dr's aren't stupid they know when they are being lied to.

i change my son right before bed (he is 4 months) and he sleeps the whole night (even if his diaper is soiled) so sometimes you cant really help it. I change him right when he gets up and right when he soils his diaper the rest of the day.  But to have him scream because of such a bad diaper rash is HORRIBLE. If my son would be doing that I would get up, take him to the tub to rinse off his poor little bottom, put diaper rash ointment on him and let him air dry a little bit. There is no reason to let a poor baby scream in pain because YOU wanted more sleep.

Not even on my very worst day would I let that happen. Change the kid already. It takes maybe four minutes even if your tired.

This is awful. There will always be times when they are dirty and we don't realize it but to KNOW that there is a problem and that he needs changed and to pretend to sleep anyway is gross. I agree with a PP that if it doesn't bother you for your son to be in pain from a diaper rash and nasty diaper that there may be a problem. Whether you need to get some help or give him to somebody who would really take care of him but something needs to happen. I can't imagine letting my child scream in the night because of diaper issues.

Just change his diaper! It takes all of 30 seconds, maybe a minute if it's poopy.

When my daughter was a newborn, I'd change her diaper right there in her crib. If I took her out she'd stay awake for who knows how long after.

thts soooo effin selfish, especially if ur LO is getting a diper rash! i mean my god, it takes less than a mintue to change the poor baby, maybe you should sleep in a soiled diaper all night, get a rash and see wht it feels like!! I make sure bfore my DS goes to sleep he has on a new diaper because he pees so much at night, sometimes during the night if he is extremly wet to the point were his clothes are soaked, ill change his whole outfit!

wowwww. i can't believe you would do something like that to a baby ... it's not like they can take care of it themselves. just wait til you're in diapers & expect your child to take care of you ... i hope you get left to sleep in your own poop. that is disgusting and you don't deserve to have a child ...

I have 3 children so its not like I can take a nap during the day but I can still change my daughters diaper at night if she needs it.  I am all for making daddy help but you have got to be kidding me if you think that this is ok.  Why would you let you child be in pain.  I think that it is completely inrresponsible to not get up to change your child especially if you have to get up to feed.  Unless she is only a little damp and sleeping this is part of our routine if she wakes up in the middle of the night.  Now she sleeps until 5 or 6 so we change after she has eaten a little.

Either wake up and take care of your child or get some one who will.

I think you know it is wrong so I won't waste time lecturing you but just to let you know, the doctor knows you are lying and it is noted in your baby's chart.   If you know you are going to be too lazy to get up and change your baby, the least you can do is make sure the baby is bathed before bedtime and a really thick coat of Desitin is applied to his bottom.   That should give him some relief.   Maybe you should go to bed a little earlier than your husband or try to get a nap in during the day if you are just too tired to get up with your baby.

I don't change diapers overnight unless they are poopy.  I apply a healthy dose of diaper rash ointment to her diaper area before she gets diapered at night.  She's 7 months and has NEVER had a diaper rash.
