Pre-baby, I was the type of person who cleaned my house all the time—especially when company was coming. But once she arrived, I had very little time for anything else. So when people came to see her my house was a mess. I had to take a deep breath and let it go. Everyone understood.
Fast forward to a year later. My house is still a mess. I still don't have time to clean. But now my concern is not so much what company will think as "Is my baby going to die from all the filthy things she picks up and puts into her mouth?"
Nope. Eating dirty stuff is good for babies. "What a child is doing when he puts things in his mouth is allowing his immune system to explore his environment,” Mary Ruebush, a microbiology and
immunology instructor, writes in her book, Why Dirt Is Good. "Not only does this allow for 'practice' of immune responses,
which will be necessary for protection, but it also plays a critical
role in teaching the immature immune response what is best ignored."
And Dr. Joel V. Weinstock, the director of gastroenterology and hepatology at Tufts Medical Center in Boston told the New York Times, "Children raised in an ultraclean environment are not being exposed to organisms that help them develop appropriate immune regulatory circuits. Children should be allowed to go barefoot in the dirt, play in the dirt, and not have to wash their hands when they come in to eat." He points out that children who grow up on farms and are frequently exposed to worms and other organisms from farm animals are much less likely to develop allergies and autoimmune diseases.
All that in a nutshell: eating dirt helps promote a healthy immune system.
So now when company comes over, and my house is a mess, I can explain that I keep it dirty on purpose because it's much healthier for my baby.

time to clean the house? what,, i barely have time to clean my teeth!
I totally agree with this. I read something about this WAY before I even considered having a child, and it just made sense. The human race seems to have been doing just fine up til now, and people walked all over dirt and never really washed their hands before eating back in the times before super disinfectants.
Plus, god only knows what sort of awful inorganic chemicals are IN those cleaning/disinfecting agents. No Thanks
..
Wow! What a great exuse, can we use in years to come too? I do not always pick up and I don't care. My daughter will grow up way too fast and the dirt will be there to clean then!
Yay!! Now I don't feel so bad! I haven't been able to clean up the way I want since I had my son, and that was 15 mos ago.
Good to know! I'm ditching the guilt about my not so tidy house ;-) Also... we live in the country and my kids spend their summers DIRTY and I only bathe them when the day is completely done... so it's good to know it's good for them!
I"ve been saying that ever since my DD was born and I'd get dirty looks from little old ladies at the store for popping her pacifier in her mouth after it was on the floor with little more than some spit to clean it off. I'd just look at them and say " i'm just building up her immune system!"
Peajewel I totally agree. Our babies are only babies for a while but the dirt will be there forever. Why not enjoy our babies now and clean tomorrow.
I'm sorry, it may be healthy. But for those that have strict landlords, having a "dirty" house isn't an option.
Well, I clean, but it's DEF not perfect. Guess this is why my kids are rarely sick!! YAY ME!! I ROCK!! LOL!
This is so funny, my friend kept on telling me that this is why my children had to many ear and sinus infection. My house was to clean. I am not the one that cleans it, it is my husband. My kitchen floors are so clean you could eat off of them.
