A friend of mine recently moved to a different city and is having trouble with her child’s new pediatrician.

She didn’t feel heard. She felt like her concerns were being brushed off. She felt rushed -- like her child was just another check on the to-do list for the day.

  • My advice to her was to to switch doctors.

    Don’t think twice. Don’t second-guess yourself.

My advice was to try every pediatrician in the city if you have to. It may be inconvenient, but it is important. You have to find a pediatrician that you love.

  • A good pediatrician is a gift.

This person will walk through motherhood with you. You will see them through viruses, broken bones, potential childhood delays, choosing schools, explaining puberty to your soon-to-be tween, and making huge decisions that have a lifelong impact.

  • A good pediatrician listens.

They listen to more than just your words. They listen to your tone. Your heart. The little crack in your voice that lets them know you are nervous.

When you aren’t sure you are doing the right thing for your child, they will advise when they can, and point you to qualified professionals when they need to.

  • A good pediatrician will value your gut impulse.

They won’t shrug off a mother’s intuition. A mother knows when something is off with their child. If you don’t have a doctor in your corner that believes that, and practices that, you don’t have the right doctor.

  • A good pediatrician pays attention.

They pay attention to symptoms and concerns, but they also pay attention to YOU. You spend more time with your child than anyone else. You are the expert on how your child acts day-to-day. Your opinion and your views should be taken seriously.

  • A good pediatrician respects your child.

From an early age, they talk to them and not AT them. They know that your child is important. Even though they are young -- their input matters. Your child has a voice, and that voice deserves to be heard.

  • A good pediatrician treats the whole child: mind, body, and spirit.

They ask about your child’s passions, their hobbies, their school experiences. They pray for your child. They think about their patients outside of the office.

  • To a good pediatrician, taking care of your child will be more than a job --

It will be their calling and their passion.

Every child deserves this kind of pediatrician in their corner, and no parent should settle for anything less.
