7 Ideas for Bonding With Your Baby on Even the Busiest Days

When your to-do list scrolls down to the floor, it’s easy to feel guilty that you’re not spending enough “quality time” with your baby. But here’s the thing: All your infant really needs to feel connected is the physical sensation of you, nearby. Every minute you spend together helps build those bonds, even if you’re not able to give your baby uninterrupted attention. So do what you have to do, and use these simple ways to bond while you’re doing it:

  1. Keep him close. Tuck your baby into a sling or carrier and go about your day. He’ll feel the warmth of your body and be calmed by your familiar scent.
  2. Talk to her. She won’t understand what you’re saying, exactly, but the sound of your voice forms her earliest memories. Narrate how you load the dishwasher or pay the bills, even if it seems boring. To her, it’s captivating. (Plus, the more words your baby hears, the stronger her language skills will be later.)
  3. Encourage daddy-baby bonding. When your partner feeds, diapers, bathes, snuggles, or plays with your baby, they both benefit—and you get a little time to yourself.
  4. Make the most of the time you do have. Pick up a Huge Value pack of New Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers, available exclusively at Walmart. Each one gives you up to 12 hours of protection, so you’ll have more uninterrupted bonding time.
  5. Drop everything, briefly. Even five minutes devoted exclusively to your baby will make a difference.
  6. Feed the bond. No matter how busy you are, your baby needs to eat every few hours. Use feeding sessions to make eye contact, stroke her skin, and sing to her. Do the same with diaper changes.
  7. Respond quickly when possible. It may be hard to stop what you’re doing—and sometimes, you just can’t—but it shows your baby he can rely on you.
