Kristin Cavallari Won't Vaccinate Son Out of Autism Fear -- Is She Being Irrational?

kristin cavallariIt's natural for moms and dads to question any and all medical decisions they make when it involves their children. We parents want to make sure we're doing the very best for our kids, particularly when it comes to their health. Hence, the vaccination debate.

For years now (or ever since Jenny McCarthy spoke out on her belief that there was a connection between vaccinations and autism?), parents have divided themselves into two groups: The group that vaccinates (or delays vaccinations/skips a few vaccinations), and the group who doesn't at all. Soon-to-be-mom-of-two Kristen Cavallari falls into the latter category. Recently during an interview, Cavallari admit that she never vaccinated her son Camden out of fear that the immunizations will cause autism.

During an appearance on Fox Business show The Independents, Cavallari said, "You know what, I've read too many books about autism. There is a pediatric group called Homestead or, shoot, Homestead or Home First -- now I have pregnancy brain, I got them confused -- but they've never vaccinated any of their children and they've never had one case of autism. And now, one in 88 boys is autistic, which is a really scary statistic."

The reporter responded, "Well, my mom vaccinated us, and she doesn't have any cases of autism either. Isn't that weird?"

"But the vaccinations have changed over the years," Cavallari replied. "There's more mercury and other [stuff]..."

Cavallari, naturally, received critism for her comments, and she's since said, "To each their own. It's our decision and that's the end of the story."

Hmm ... Of course moms and dads have a right to parent the way they feel most comfortable, but is it really "to each their own" when it comes to vaccinations? I don't think anyone wants nearly eradicated diseases to resurface, like measles currently are. I don't anyone wants to live in a society with polio and small pox? It's been proven over and over again that autism is not caused by vaccinations (the Autism Speaks website even states this).

There's something a little uncomfortable about forcing parents to vaccinate their children, though, at some point, it may come to this. Perhaps another option is to better education people on the subject, to show that autism isn't caused by immunizations? Maybe it's naive to think, but it seems like less people would opt out of vaccinations if they knew the facts.

Because, even though I respect Cavallari's "to each their own" attitude, I'm not 100% convinced she's got all of her information straight.

What do you think of Kristin Cavallari's comments? Do you vax your kids?

Poor girl.. She should have chosen her words a little better if she was going to represent a whole way of life. I wouldnt want to be in her situation..

I think if you dont want to vaccinate, you shouldnt.  Theres a whole bank account dedicated to the goverment paying the victims of vaccines. They do harm people. Leave her alone.

Awesome. Now her kids are subjected to deadly diseases due to her fear of vaccines.

Read books on autism huh? really Which ones did she read because everyone that I have ever read, that was trying to give the facts and wasn't biased, has always pointed out that there is no definitive proof.

now what else has changed way more dramatically and for the worse for everybody in America. Diet! the majority of the Americans have super poor diets and deficient in so much minerals and vitamins and then they get pregnant the baby is not getting all it needs to develop correctly. we just want or processed food and we want it now! as parents we want to blame an outside force for our problems. We don't want to be told that our lifestyle is what caused our babies problems. that moms are at fault. No longer are we planning babies and making sure we are healthy first before getting pregnant. we just go swimming with the sharks with no protection hoping that its "not me" that has birth defects. all the chemicals we ingest affect our developing baby. so put that coke down and go drink some water. put down those frozen dinners, canned dinners, boxed dinners, and go make some fresh food! If you are of child making years you need to prep your body years before! Dont wait until you find out your pregnant to change your ways or quit stuff cold turkey, because it will be to late. Our future generations are being ruined from the moment of conception because of what we are doing to our bodies. but you go ahead and not vaccinate your children because there are plenty of children out there that are autistic and not vaccinated what excuse are those parents going to use? eat right, live right, be right

She's an idiot. Don't be irresponsible and get your child sick because you choose not to vaccinate him. Idiotic parents like that should go to jail for neglect. I almost wish her kids get sick.

Do you know what is scarier than Autism? Polio.

Vaccines DO NOT cause Autism. There is ZERO scientific evidence to support this fact. Refusing to vaccinate your child because you read is dangerous. Stop depending on my kids vaccine to protect YOUR child. Herd immunity is real; not every vaccine takes with every person so about 20% of vaccinated individuals are not protected. This is why this is not a personal issue but a global one.

people are so "worried" about parents deciding not to vaccinate, but say nothing about the millions of unvaccinated, disease carrying illegals
