Praying Parents Guilty in Death of Second Child They Wouldn't Take to Doctor

That's Criminal 70

The Philadelphia couple who were charged with murder in the death of their 7-month-old son after they refused to seek medical treatment for his pneumonia because of their religious beliefs have pleaded no contest and will likely spend 20 to 40 years in prison. The couple, Herbert and Catherine Schaible, gained notoriety after their baby died as they prayed for his bacterial pneumonia to go away rather than bringing him to a doctor. He died after several days of what experts say must have been extreme distress. What's even more utterly tragic was that this wasn't the first time this had happened!

The couple were already on 10 years probation and ordered by a judge to seek medical treatment for their children after their 2-year-old son, Kent, had come down with the same virus and died the exact same way -- as his parents prayed over him and refused to get him medical care. Unbelievable!!!

No doubt the fact that the couple had seven other children contributed to their lack of prison time the first time around, because without parents, there would have been seven orphans. But their idiocy just put those kids in danger even more, and sure enough, they went ahead and had another kid and the same thing happened!

This is the kind of thing that just makes you want to pull your hair out about the justice system, but unfortunately there are no laws about who can procreate if they are free citizens.

Is it tragic that seven more of their children now don't have parents? Not in my book. Which is the book of common sense, not that other book. The book of common sense says these kids may never reach adulthood with these parents, who wouldn't take them to a doctor no matter what happens to them.

I don't know where in the Bible it says you shouldn't bring your kids to a doctor -- and I don't think anyone should blindly follow a collection of tracts penned thousands of years ago -- but if religion doesn't allow you to take a gun to your kids, it shouldn't allow you to blatantly ignore it when they're dying either.

Hopefully, the other children now have a chance at life, provided they aren't handed over to people with the same stubborn belief system.

Do you think they belong in prison?

I don't understand that belief system. Why not believe that God provided man with the knowledge to treat and cure some of these illnesses? He provided us with the tools and brains to make medicine. These people should be ashamed of themselves.

It had been raining for days and days, and a local river crested, flooding many houses. The waters rose so high that one man was forced to climb onto the roof of his house. As the waters rose higher and higher, a man in a rowboat appeared, and told him to get in. "No," replied the man on the roof. "I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me." So the man in the rowboat went away. The man on the roof prayed for God to save him. The waters rose higher and higher, and suddenly a speedboat appeared. "Climb in!" shouted a man in the boat. "No," replied the man on the roof. "I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me." So the man in the speedboat went away. The man on the roof prayed for God to save him. The waters continued to rise. A helicopter appeared and over the loudspeaker, the pilot announced he would lower a rope to the man on the roof. "No," replied the man on the roof. "I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me." So the helicopter went away. The man on the roof prayed for God to save him. The waters rose higher and higher, and eventually they rose so high that the man on the roof was washed away, and alas, the poor man drowned. Upon arriving in heaven, the man marched straight over to God. "Heavenly Father," he said, "I had faith in you, I prayed to you to save me, and yet you did nothing. Why?" God gave him a puzzled look, and replied "I sent you two boats and a helicopter, what more did you expect?"

NoWay, these people are about 51 cards short of a full deck, if you catch my drift.  They have no room in their worldview for any viewpoint but theirs.

@schlis: This! Exactly this! Why can't people believe that God put everything we need on this earth? Instead of praying for miracles, how about the miracle of modern medicine? If you believe that God created everything, and knows everything, then you have to believe that He knew that we would use our inginuity and creativity and use the tools He provided us with. People who rely on nothing but faith healing are ignoring the things that He provided us to help ourselves.

I believe in prayer, and I believe that God can heal people. BUT I also believe in Drs and having them help you as best they can. Prayer and medicine can go together.

Why pray to a god to heal a disease he created in the first place? Go home logic. You're not welcomed here.

Absolutely they deserve prison. They knew first hand the consequence of not treating this virus and yet they let their baby, who was completely dependent on them for his well being, die an excruciating death while that sat idly by and did nothing.

GOD is the giver of all that is good MissMissfit why do you think sicness is good?

GOD heals YES GOD also gave man the knowledge to treat our sicknesses. There is nothing wrong with praying AND seeking doctors help
