Jessica Simpson's Post-Baby Weight-Loss Secret Will Work For You Too

I can't stand it when celebrities say they aren't working hard to lose their baby weight, but by the same token most of us simply can't live on lettuce and treadmills alone, like our girl Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian's Atkins diet, though it may be working brilliantly for the future Mrs. West, doesn't seem like a practical option for any hot-blooded Italian girl who refuses to give up her pasta. 

That's why I am loving Jessica Simpson's weight loss plan. It's novel, it's refreshing, it's...so boring and normal.

Rather than follow a fad diet, Jessica -- who took lots of heat for her weight gain with both of her pregnancies -- is sticking to a diet based on the Weight Watchers point system, for which she became a spokesperson after the birth of her first child in 2012. But by the sound of it, she isn't, you know, married to frozen dinners or anything. She hasn't abandoned sugar altogether, but eats low-fat Skinny Cow treats when she's craving something sweet. She enjoys healthy spicy chicken sandwiches -- yep, with actual bread -- and even makes pizza, but replaces the dough with a tortilla.

And there's no way around it, you have to move it if you want to lose it. I love that Jess says breastfeeding has been "amazing," but not one of "favorite things in the world" and instead of giving most of the weight loss credit to nursing -- something I never understood because I ate like a truck driver while I was breastfeeding and lost most of the weight only when I stopped -- she does resistance training a respectable four times a week and goes on long walks with her fiance. So she hasn't forgotten that exercise doesn't have to be torture, but can actually be a pleasant, bonding experience that rejuvenates the spirit and mind, as well.

Everyone is different and I've always felt that what works for one new mom may not do it for another. But following a Jessica Simpson-like diet of common sense -- doing enough to push myself, but not so much that I felt exhausted -- helped me drop my baby weight in six months. No, not in three months like Kim K., but I was able to maintain my original weight and feel healthy enough to concentrate on learning how to be a mom. Which was more important to me.
