I especially love the messages she sends to young women including but not limited to that you don't have to be stick figure thin to wear rompers. She's smart, witty, and very talented. Now she can add breastfeeding advocate to that list after posting a photo of her friend nursing her baby and telling Instagram to "get down with the nipple." Instagram recently took down breastfeeding yoga mom's profile for posting her infamous photo. So this ... this is a protest, social networking style.

When a person supports a woman who is breastfeeding (in general or in public) that furthers the cause to have breastfeeding seen as a normal act. Because we all know that more than half of all Americans find it obscene

Dunham posted the gorgeous photo on Instagram with the caption:

My @sarahsophief feeding the brand new Dusty. I made the flower crown and she added the flower censor. Wish she didn’t have to cuz the nipple is dope. Instagram, get down with the nipple.

Sarah posted the photo as well saying:

Found the best breast feeding get up. @lindseythornburg dress. Crown & photo by the talented @lenadunham. Flower censor by me due to instagram's super lame blocking of the breast feeding ladies.

Side note: That dress is fabulous and has the perfect deep V-neckline to just pull to the side and nurse.

Instagram is owned by Facebook now and we all know how they feel about breastfeeding photos. They somehow see breastfeeding as a form of pornography and take down profiles and remove photos with stern warnings if a woman has a photo of herself nursing her baby. This is essentially saying they do not support a woman nursing her baby. This is exactly the opposite of normalizing breastfeeding. We live in a culture where an alleged rape is witnessed by a crowd who instead of helping tweets it. But we get all in a huff over breastfeeding photos. Seriously.

There are plenty of people complaining about this censorship, but when someone like Lena Dunham speaks up about it, more people listen because her voice has much more weight. And she's using that fame for good. This is Dunham showing her support for not just her friend who is breastfeeding, but any woman who has gone through the same thing -- any kind of breastfeeding censorship -- and it's for any woman wanting to, thinking about, or is currently or was ever breastfeeding. I'm not sure if she realizes that or not, but we sure appreciate it.

Thank you Lena and Sarah for this gorgeous photo (with or without the flower, though we see no need for it and think the rest of the world should also get a grip). As Lena said "the nipple is dope" and so is breastfeeding and breastfeeding supporters.

What do you think of Lena posting this? Do you think breastfeeding photos are obscene or should be censored?
