Mom Harassed for Breastfeeding 16-Day-Old Outside Daughter's Dance Class (VIDEO)

Rant 182

breastfeeding rightsHere we go again. Another breastfeeding mom has tangled with a real boob about her right to nurse her baby in public. Only Lucy Eades's breastfeeding discrimination case might just take the prize for craziest place a mom was given grief for feeding her kid.

The incident -- which Eades' husband caught on video -- happened at the Burleson Recreation Center in Burleson, Texas. You know what recreation centers are for, don't you?

That's right ... families. So a family-friendly place, a place for moms and kids, had a problem with a mom feeding her ... kid?

As if it isn't hard enough out there for nursing moms to get respect in shopping centers, courthouses, and restaurants, now kid-centric establishments are a problem too?

The City of Burleson defended itself by explaining that it was hosting a camp for 5- to 13-year-olds the day Eades was trying to breastfeed her 16-day-old daughter while her older child attended a dance class:

To be respectful of everyone's rights we asked the women to cover up. There is nothing in the law that prohibits the city from requiring a mother to cover up. We also offered a room in an attempt to be more accommodative. The city did not attempt to prohibit breastfeeding and we fully support the freedom of mothers to breastfeed as long as it doesn't infringe on someone else's freedom.

Giant. Eye. Roll.

Come on y'all! The "freedom" of a bunch of kids is not at risk because a mom breastfeeds in their presence, especially not if they're from homes where a mom breastfeeds or their parents have taught them that breastfeeding is normal. Heck, the more kids see breastfeeding, the more likely THEY are to breastfeed (or support a partner doing so) when they grow up. It's like that whole circle of life thing Elton John sang about.

What's really at issue here is why a facility would present opportunities for children, claiming to be a place where parents can take their kids, and then not support parents. Being able to breastfeed at a recreation center for kids is just as important as being able to find a diaper changing station at the same facility.

Either you're family-friendly or you're not, and as long as you're not OK with breastfeeding moms, you're NOT family-friendly.

Do you expect the places where you take your kids be breastfeeding-friendly? Have you ever experienced trouble in one?

These people sicken ne. We have lived abroad in various countries for the past year and a half and my 3 year old son doesnt bat an eye a breastfeeding because its normal to him and tnot the least bit noteworthy. It will never cease to baffle me hor uneducated people try to bully the educated moms in America into being ashamed of doing the most natural thing a mother can do for her child. Only in America too.

Dad was right, no point in even arguing, the law is on the mom's side.

I am super pro breastfeeding. I breast fed my kids. I love when friends decide to try to do it and succeed. I think it is a wonderful. fulfilling thing. That being said, If a woman who is a complete stranger has her boob out, and is nursing, I do get upset. It is NOT her place to expose my young son to it, that blatently. It is not hard to cover up. It is not hard to turn a bit so it's not hanging out. THAT is what so many people have an issue with. They are used to women who just flop a boob out and leave it exposed for everyone to see. That is not modest, it is not appropriete and it is not polite. Cover up. If more nursing moms were polite about it, more people would be accepting of it.

How the heck is that a problem??? Pretty sure that seeing someone nurse isn't going to hurt a kid! UGHUGHUGH! My 3 year old son has seen so many of my friends breastfeed (and he did for 24 months)and I have actually had to make a point to a friend that unless THEY were uncomfortable there was no issue nursing WITHOUT a cover right in front of him! He doesn't even notice...the most he will say is "oh baby's hungry, (baby's name) has a good mommy!" We should be teaching kids to support breastfeeding...oh well, at least I know my son (and yours too @Katyq) will make a kick ass husband who want the best for his baby!

@mamalei, totally agree :)

Idiot employee meets idiot parents. Both sides behaved poorly.

The parents were looking for a fight and social media attention and they got what they wanted. The employee was stupid to give it to them.

@Jak_Momma...I understand where you are coming from...but it important to note that breasts are not sexual in nature but are for nourishment. I mentioned friends, but I also fully support strangers doing the same...once had a woman at a table by us at Olive Garden struggling to keep a cover on...had my son with me (and a friend had her daughter). I actually went up to her and told her that unless he wanted to cover that we wouldn't be offended, in fact I would be more hurt if she kept struggling instead of just letting baby eat...she cried, and said that was the best thing she had heard. It's our job to support each other, and covers only impede breastfeeding and make it so much harder for so many of us.

Oh and this town - supportive of families? Give me a break.

Ask the city how it defines "family" for its membership rates.

With a 16 day old, Id be lucky if I remembered the older ones ballet shoes, Im not bringing a lame old cover along too.

MammaLei like it or not, breasts are sexual. They're not single purpose.
