8 Bizarre Baby Rituals From Around the World (PHOTOS)

crying babyAww! Would you believe they have a crying baby contest in Japan? Yep, it's pretty much exactly what it sounds like, and it's somewhat of a tradition over there.

It's called the Naki Sumo, and it's basically a ceremony where two sumo wrestlers stand in a ring across from each other while holding babies who were born in the previous year. The object of "the game" is to make their opponent's baby cry -- and even though it sounds kind of miserable for the poor babies, it's been done for over 400 years and is meant as a prayer for the baby's healthy growth.

Even though this is something most of us can't imagine ever taking part in with our little ones, there are plenty of other cultures all over the world who have some sort of ritual they swear by to ensure the well being of their babies.

Take a look at the photos below to see some of the wackiest baby traditions from around the globe.

The spitting thing is common in most of eastern Europe. In old China they would insult the baby instead of praising it as to not make the gods think they were vain.

Irish ones a lie, it's kept to be enjoyed on the first anniversary or christening whichever comes first.

Coining. A coin is rubbed on the skin to help with illness leaving marks. SE Asia is the place where that is done. In America they can be charged with abuse and have been.

And in America, baby boys are strapped down to a table while a doctor rips and cuts away the skin on his genitals to make them look "nice."

Some women here in America do the same thing as Balinese women.....never put their babies down.  Let me tell you, a coddled brat who has been nothing but held since he or she was born is a miserable baby to watch!  mypbandj, my son was circumscized and lived to tell the tale.  Seriously, it's not as horrible as people make it out to be.

So in Spain I guess I can understand the jumping thing. But why do they dress like Santa?
