Jenna Bush Hager and her husband Henry Hager are now parents. The former first daughter and current Today show correspondent gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday night. Her parents, former President George W. Bush and Laura Bush, are said to be very happy.
In fact, the former President released a statement saying how thrilled both he and his wife were to announce the birth of their grandchild. Is there anyone more perfect to announce it?
The baby's name is a beautiful blend of old school traditional and exotic modern fun. She will share her name both with her family and with famous leaders of other countries who recently died (hint, hint). Her name is:
Margaret Laura Hager. The name honors both grandmothers. But she will be called neither. In fact, her nickname will be "Mila." As in Kunis. As in really, really pretty! I love it.
It really is a great name for a little lady who is born into quite a dynasty of leadership. Though she wasn't named for Margaret Thatcher, the leader who worked closely with her grandfather, George Bush, Senior, when he was president, it's a bit of a nod to her. And it's a beautiful name that has a long history and is very dignified.
It's not surprising that they would choose NOT to make her name Mila outright. Though it's puzzling. As someone whose parents did the same thing, I do wonder what that name will do to her future. Will she forever have to explain why her legal first name is a blending of her first and middle name? This has been the bane of my existence for as long as I remember.
As you can see, my name is Sasha above. My whole life, my parents and family have called me Sasha (save for a brief few years in public school where I thought "Sasha" was too ethnic), but that has never been my legal name. In fact, my name is a perfect blending of my first name (that starts with S) and my middle name, which is Mariasha. Mila's is the same.
Still, I have survived this minor annoyance for the past 30+ years and so will Mila. Congrats to all. Truly, this is a joyous occasion and, I am sure, a beautiful little girl with an equally lovely name.
Do you have a nickname that sounds nothing like your name?
