Okay, remember that absolutely horrifying story a couple of years back about the 18-month-old boy in Indonesia with a 40-cigarette a day habit? I know, who could forget? Watching that little boy puff away was so surreal, I kept hoping the whole thing was a hoax. It wasn't, unfortunately. But at the very least, I figured, that HAD to be a one-time freak occurrence. I mean, it's not like there would ever be ANOTHER smoking baby.
Except, apparently there is another smoking baby. In Shanghai. Where he was photographed recently bumming a cig from his parents. As with the Indonesian baby, I can't help but hope this is a hoax (it is April Fools' Day, after all), but it seems legit. And the details are disturbing, to say the least.
The photographer who captured the alarming scene had this to say on Shanghai Style File:
My jaw dropped when his pajama-clad mother handed the tot a cigarette ... then lit it for him ... then smiled on as he smoked it ... then laughed as he rolled on the ground when he felt sick. As I snapped photos, my friends begged the parents to intervene, but they just enjoyed the show. This is a disturbing scene indeed, but I could not not share this.
Whoa. As a mom (and, um, human being), I'm trying to wrap my head around what those parents were thinking and ... ?!?! The only remotely sane (well, not sane, but not diabolically evil) explanation I can come up with is that maybe the little boy was really curious about Mommy's cigarettes and finally she figured, Well, if he tries it once he'll never want one again! That'll learn him!
But the part about how the parents just laughed when the baby got sick and strangers "begged them to intervene" makes me feel absolutely ill.
I don't know. Maybe it's fake?! Please, God! Check out the photos and tell us what you think.
Why would any parent let their baby smoke cigarettes?!
