Footage of Baby Being Flung From Car Reminds Us How Important Car Seats Are (VIDEO)

OMG 25

I don't normally like to share stories about Terrible Things Happening to Small Children, but I'm going to make an exception for this crazy accident caught on video -- because 1) it has a happy ending, and 2) it serves as a powerful reminder to always, always, ALWAYS use a car seat.

Fair warning: the video is pretty upsetting, because it shows a toddler being ejected from a car and landing on the highway right in front of an oncoming truck. The good news is that she's fine, thanks to some miraculous last-second maneuvering by the driver of that semi (and maybe more than a little good luck/divine intervention). The bad news is that this whole horrible ordeal could have been avoided if her dad had just buckled her into her car seat.

The incident happened in Russia on January 20, and was captured by another driver's dashboard camera. In the footage, you can clearly see a Mitsubishi SUV skidding across the icy road and into the wrong lane, then being smashed by a truck -- at which point the child is FLUNG from the back of the car, right into oncoming traffic.

Here's the video:

God, that's awful, isn't it? Thankfully, the child escaped serious injury -- she was treated for cuts and bruises, but it certainly could have been much, much worse.

So now that we're all breathing a sigh of relief that the little girl is okay, let's turn our attention to the safety issue at hand here. Russian news reports that her father had placed the child on a blanket on the shelf under the back windshield rather than strapping her into a seat. I'm sure he's had plenty of time to re-consider that decision (and the choice to try and pass someone during dangerous driving conditions), but this video is certainly a gripping visual reminder of what can happen without a car seat, isn't it?

During the force of a collision, an unbuckled little body may become a projectile, which is exactly what happened in this accident. According to the CDC, child safety seats reduce the risk of death in passenger cars by 71 percent for infants, and by 54 percent for toddlers ages 1 to 4 years. Hopefully that little girl's father won't think twice about buckling her in from now on -- and maybe this video will help serve as a public reminder about how important it is to use the car seat, every single time.

Did your heart stop when you saw this video?

ummm... how can they even be thinking about their stuff? I'm sorry I don't think I do anything but examine every inch of my kid for damage for days.

Yeah, those people are nuts. I'd have been hugging my family and crying in the snow on the side of the road. MAYBE I'd have gone for the blanket to keep the baby warm. Wow.

I'm really upset you have this on here and that I watched it believing it had a happy ending and how it was a reminder to buckle our kids in. It is not a happy ending when the dad runs out and picks her up like a rag doll, then puts her in the car while the mom picks up their possessions. Neither of them seeming concerned over their child's well being but more so of their possessions. I am so upset seeing the reaction of these parents. And it wasn't about buckling your kid in. She was in the back laying down!!!! I am so upset at this video.

OMG I'd be so scared! I don't think I'd go for the stuff, maybe the blanket to keep the kids warm but OMG the baby just flew out of the car! I'd be much more worried about the child.

What a couple of assholes.  I think they need to be forcibly sterilized.

Seriously people?  Did you not realize this video is a foreign video??  It may not even be a law to have your child in a restraint there.

And I honestly thought they were clearing debris out of the way for the other lane of traffic.

Video looks like a hoax

Gina's right, this looks like a hoax. Probably a public safety video or something, or another one of those hawk grabs kid student practice video things lol I don't know what to call it

He picked her up by her snowsuit! I hope this is fake. It looks like they are trying to cover for something shady, since they are too busy picking up their shit to take care of the human being who was just hurled from a moving car and splatter onto the road. Fuckers. Fucking Russia and China, man. They don't give a shit about kids.

I've never been to Russia. However, my husband is from Bulgaria and when we've visited with our young child it was very difficult for friends and family to accommodate our car seat. Only in the last two years have car seats become legally required, and before that they were not typically used. (Much like a few decades ago here.). Several family members had to borrow a larger car, because our American car seat didn't fit in their car. We insisted on using the car seat, and I think they are critical. However, they still aren't common in some parts of the world.
