Oh baby! Shakira gave birth to her first child in Barcelona on January 22. Weighing in at 6 pounds, 6 ounces, the hospital said mom and newborn are doing great and are in "excellent health," reported Us Weekly. Needless to say, the singer and her soccer star boyfriend Gerard Pique are overjoyed. As for what they named the adorable little bundle -- well, it's a name befitting a kid with such cool parents.
The moniker they chose for their son? Milan Pique Mebarak. Explaining the decision on her website, Shakira wrote:
[T]he name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification.
She went on to gush, "Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth." All along the star has kept fans in the loop with her pregnancy. On the way to the hospital, she tweeted, "I'd like to ask you all to accompany me in your prayers on this very important day of my life. Shak."
However, the couple did play a bizarre pregnancy prank on fans around Christmastime. "Our son has been born! We are very happy! Thanks for all your messages," Gerard tweeted to his nearly five million followers. As everyone flew into a tizzy, he soon revealed it was all a joke. I don't get it. What's so funny about that? Oh well. The baby is here now. We'll see how great dad's sense of humor is after three months of sleepless nights!
What do you think of the name Shakira chose?
