Woman Survives Car Accident Just Long Enough to Give Birth to Her Baby

Heartbreaking 16

It seems like there are days when I start off virtually every story with "This is tragic ... " and, yikes, it's shaping up to be one of those days. A 30-year-old pregnant woman in Chandler, Arizona was riding in a car with her father, mother, and 2-year-old son when the car was hit by a flatbed truck. Tragically, the mother, Wei Chu, was killed. She also was eight months pregnant. However, before she died, she did something miraculous.

The woman was rushed to the hospital and managed to give birth to her baby right before she died. The baby is in critical condition, but is alive. Chu's husband rushed to the hospital where he faced an unbelievable situation: Saying goodbye to his wife at the same time he welcomed his new daughter into the world.

A police officer told Hollywood Life that the baby was delivered via C-section. He said: "I have been doing this for 12 years and I have never heard of a circumstance like this. So far this little girl is a miracle baby, but she remains in critical condition."

I cannot imagine the grief of this scenario -- delivering your baby while fighting for your life. Still, there is something miraculous about her having the strength to hold on long enough that her baby could survive.

No charges have been filed -- apparently drinking or high speeds were not involved. It appears to be a freak accident where the driver of the car, Chu's father, turned into oncoming traffic without looking, and they happened to get hit by a utility truck much bigger than their car. Reportedly, the driver of the truck stopped at the scene and was distraught. The others in the car were not seriously injured. This is just a horrible tragedy for all involved -- and I truly hope this miracle baby pulls through.

Do you know anyone who has given birth under tragic circumstances?

My heart goes out to them. When I was in labor, there was a woman brought into the hospital who had been hit by a drunk driver in a crosswalk. She was about 34 weeks, and she'd broken her back. The baby was too unstable for anesthesia, so I listened to this poor woman labor with a broken back and NO pain medication, trying to deliver her baby. She did it, and died that night. Her son lived though. Everytime I start to complain about my rough labor, I think about this heroic mom and her sacrifice, and suddenly mine seems like a walk in the park.

sigh one life taken but one delivered thus the circle goes on

Tragic but turning in to traffic without looking isn't a freak accident, it's negligence.

I agree Rhonda.  The father was negligent and this poor woman paid with her life.  If he has a heart at all, then he's suffering under the understanding that his daughter's death was his fault.  If he doesn't, then I hope they nail his ass to the wall.

Wow Carmen and Rhonda...think he doesn't know that. And the author didn't ask if you think the dad should feel guilty, foolish girls. Pretty sure he is a mess.

I don't personally know anyone who has gone through this but it's a bittersweet ending. Very bittersweet. A life taken a life given, sad sad sad.

I'm a nurse and had a mom deliver via c-section in the ER after having a brain anurysm rupture at home.  EMS was doing CPR on her for a long time.  The mom didn't make it.  The baby made it to the NICU, but I don't know how well it did long term.  Mom was down for a while, so it probably had some oxygen deprivation also :(

My late hubby's cousin & his pregnant wife were driving home from thanksgiving dinner at her parent's home in the Central Valley of California. Their pick up was hit by a train. Hubby's cousin wasn't expected to survive the night, his wife lived long enough for them to deliver the baby via c-section. Today, cousin's hubby is fully recovered & their daughter is now 26 & just got married last summer.
