Remember the tainted formula in China that made all those babies sick so recently? Well, it turns out that some formula in the U.S. is also tainted with melamine. The FDA said it found trace levels of melamine or a chemical byproduct of melamine in formula, including Similac, Good Start, and Enfamil. FDA officials say that the levels are so low they don't pose a health threat. But if you're worried, please read FDA sets standard for baby formula. And if you want to join in the conversation, everyone in the CafeMom Newcomers Club is talking about melamine in baby formula.

Well, let's see... The FDA itself is referring to melamine as a "contaminant" and stating that the "levels of contamination" are so low that it's safe.
Funny, I was always taught that safe food was UNcontaminated food.
And aren't these the same people who told us that pet food was safe- regarding the very same chemical? Then once our nation's pets started dying, the people made such a stink that the FDA was FORCED to issue a recall.
This is not to mention the fact that only 1.3% of all imported foods are inspected by the FDA. But the FDA says they're stepping it up in China! They are opening a food safety office there that will have 9-12 inspectors... for 450,000 food production facilities. Good luck to them.
Be wary, my friends.
I put together alot of information regarding this over the holiday weekend, see it in this journal:
http://www.cafemom.com/journals/read/1310695/Melamine_in_formula_in_the_USA_updated
You may not agree with my thoughts, but I present the data to every mom who wishes to read it and make their own INFORMED decision regarding the food.
Also today the FDA released info about their new Food Safety Program:

I am happy to help people understand this information, please write to me on my page or by message with your questions!

From what I understand, the Chinese were intentionally putting this into their formula to make it appear healthier than it was (Was it protein? It fooled tests into thinking it had more), whereas here it's just in products used to clean the machines and traces are getting into the food.
It's not really a problem for me, as I'm breastfeeding...but I have an entire shelf of Enfamil Lipil samples on standby, should I ever have an emergency and need to use formula...that makes me a little nervous!
China is trying to kill are kids next it is going to be us im just glad that my daughter is off of formula! I think the US should stop haveing china make everything for us because 1st it was the milk in china then the candy now this whats next? =[ It is so upsetting to see i cant stand it anymore!
oh, this is fun.
I don't see anyone mentioning that, in the US, any traces of melamine come from the packaging, it's not an ingredient in formula. I just wanted to make sure that was clear to everyone. It, unfortunately, is in everything we eat that is from a container (nice thought, huh). Milk for formula in the US, comes from the US, and the strict standards... not from China. Formula in the US is manufactured in the US, and no where else. See http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/11/26/world/main4633848.shtml, http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/melamine.html, and http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/I/INFANT_FORMULA?SITE=DCUSN&SECTION=HEALTH&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT. I am not sure which article I read it on, but I think I saw Enfamil and Good Start were on a potential recal list, and Similac wasn't???? Similac is the only company I found with a statement, http://abbottnutrition.com/news_and_media/press_releases/pressReleaseDetail.aspx?ContentTitle=Abbott%20Nutrition%20Statement%20on%20Melamine%20and%20Infant%20Formulas&year=2008&ref=similac. Which, frankly, bothers me about the other formula comanies.... I feel better about feeding my baby Similac at this point, after reading the news articles, and not seeing anything from the other companies.
OK OK SO IM NOW freaking out my daughter is 4mns. I couldn't breatfeed her for medical reasons she drinks good start soy formula... what I am I suppose to do now?
I agree with dimples367 what am I supost to do I have a 4 month old son and he takes Enfamil What can I feed him now if I can't feed him that...Am I just going to give him the regular 2% milk or is there something better for me to use I need to know fast like right now because I am not going to give my son that formula if it might hurt him. Please let me know.
I would suggest you two switch to no-name local (as in Canadian or USA produced formula) stay away from Nestle products and Enfamil products, they can't be trusted. And wrote a letter to the Minister of Health outlining your disappointment and DEMAND testing before this stuff ends up on shelves! Store brand formula is just as good, with the same nutrients and since they don;t bank on big sales----why would they mass produce, and be careless about safety like the big guys? That's what I would do anyway, I don't trust big name markets----geeeze, this is truly sad :'(
