mom and baby

What's the best age to become a mom? There isn't one. A recent study shows that older moms and younger ones can do the job just as well. And as we all know, it's a tough job. Still, being a young mom has its advantages and its disadvantages, as does being an older mom. I interviewed moms of different ages to see what they had to say on the subject so we could all appreciate each other a little more. All this week in the Baby Buzz, you'll hear from women who became Baby Mamas in their teens, their twenties, their thirties, and their forties. And you'll find we're not so different after all. We're moms who love our kids no matter how old—or how young—we are.

Today: Meet four fabulous women who had babies in their teens.

Meet trishasjunebug, Baby Mama to 5-month-old Kyle

How old were you when you had your first baby?
I was 17 when I had Kyle. I didn't decide, I got pregnant by accident, but I wanted to keep him and raise him even though I wasn't all that ready to have him.

What did you like about becoming a mom at that age?

It helped me grow up faster. It helped me go back to school, get a good career, be more responsible.

Were there any downsides to becoming a mom at that time in your life?

People talk behind my back, thinking there's no way I'm a good mom because I'm young. I lost a lot of friends, but I really don't care. I love my son. I get nasty looks in public; people tell me I made a huge mistake. In my eyes, Kyle is the best thing that could ever happen to me.

Meet mamapotter,
mama to 13-year-old Alexandra, 9-year-old Caitlyn, and 5-year-old Paige

How old were you when you had your first baby?
16—it wasn’t planned.

What did you like about becoming a mom at that age?

Being young meant that I would still have a lot of life ahead of me when she was old enough to be on her own. Teenagers have enough energy to keep up with toddlers!

Were there any downsides to becoming a mom at that time in your life?
I was still immature, and easily became overwhelmed. I didn't always make the right choices about things, like who I had my baby around. Also, it was overwhelming when she got colic.

Meet KylersMom8-16-7, Baby Mama to 15-month-old Kyler, with another baby on the way

How old were you when you had your first baby?
I had my first baby at 17. I decided to have my son because I knew I would have a lot of help and support from my family. I also knew that I could handle it, however hard it was going to be.

What did you like about becoming a mom at that age?

I really just loved being a mom, my age didn't have anything to do with it. I felt like being a young mom would be more fun--I would be able to be an active mom longer.

Were there any downsides to becoming a mom at that time in your life?
I don't feel like there was any downside. I didn't give up anything—I was still able to go to school and do what I needed to do.

Meet MyAsMoMmY5, mom to 11-month-old Tatiana and 3-year-old Mya

How old were you when you had your first baby?
I had my first daughter one month after my 16th birthday. I had my second daughter when I was 18.

What did you like about having a baby at that age?
I'd say the advantages are having energy to keep up with my kids and having motivation to better myself.

Were there any downsides to having a baby at that time in your life?
Definitely, school was a challenge, but I guess it would be at any age. Also, the negative attitude of others associated with my being a teen mother.
