Exclusive Poll: Anti-Vax Parents’ Paranoia Puts Everyone at Risk

For many moms and dads, the choice of whether or not to vaccinate is a complicated one. It shouldn't be. But the fact is some flawed scientific studies and a lot of paranoia have led to fewer parents vaccinating. And these people aren't necessarily who you would think.

A joint survey between CafeMom and Parade revealed the views of many parents when it comes to vaccination, and there were some big surprises. For instance, only 47 percent of our respondents claimed they follow their pediatrician's advice all the time and another 43 percent said they only trust their pediatrician a little or not at all.

That's pretty stunning when you think about it. How can you possibly work with a pediatrician you don't trust? Is this paranoia? Or are these parents right? See some comments from the survey below:

Immunizations are a guaranteed, serious source of income to Big Pharma. and every doctor. Immunizations prevent our children from developing a strong immune system. Childhood diseases are no more than an 'inconvenience' because there isn't a parent in the home! When mercury is used as an ingred. of vaccines, how much concern was there for the 'health' of our people/children? School districts have no right to even weigh in on immunizations, their job is to educate.

That they have to look at the big picture, that not vaccinated doesn't just involve their children but the 32,661,022 entire community. There is no reason why healthy kids should not be vaccinated when there are babies, children and adults with uncompromised immune systems that depend on herd immunity!

More from The Stir: Horrifying Ingredient Found in Vaccines Could Make Some Stop

Clearly, people are very, very mixed on vaccination. But they need to get over it. Really. They do. Every child that isn't vaccinated is a risk to another child who may have some kind of physical reason why they either cannot be vaccinated or cannot develop immunity. The less people who vaccinate, the more likely we are to have eradicated diseases come back.

Obviously we don't have to follow every bit of information our pediatricians give, but the fact is they have our child's best interests at heart. And if you think they don't? You need a new one who does. All of this is based on flawed science. There is more.

According to our survey, people are divided 50/50 as to whether the states should allow parents with "philosophical reasons" to not vaccinate. As of now, only 19 states offer that as an option while all allow for religious or health reasons. Another 53 percent of our respondents felt that children who are unvaccinated should NOT be allowed in public schools.

They have good reason for these concerns. "Herd immunity" -- the immunity that develops for an entire group of people -- is compromised by the segment of the population refusing to vaccinate. If they had REAL scientific evidence, it might be one thing. But they don't. It's fear. It's paranoia. And it's hurting us all.

There isn't a mother alive who isn't sympathetic to the idea of worrying about what we put in our kid's bodies. We all know that fear and worry and we all have it. But to compromise all children for a bit of wacky "science" that has no basis in reality is downright wrong.

I agree with the majority of our survey-takers that children who don't vaccinate shouldn't be allowed in the public schools unless they have some kind of very specific reason. It's just too risky to younger siblings, adults, and those with compromised immunity.

Choosing to not vaccinate is playing with fire. If you don't trust your pediatrician, get a new one!

Do you vaccinate? Do you want kids who don't vaccinate in public schools?

OK--now the conspiracy theory nuts are coming on board.  We're all going to die!  Maybe we should just stop eating, drinking, and shitting.  Who knows what would come of things if we did that.  Yeah, I bet there's a secret group of people in some secret world government out to wipe out everyone.  Yep.

Liz Spidel Smith

Yes we are all going to die thats upreventable, may it be of a car crash, old age, illnes or what have you it will happen.  And no we should not stop eating, drinking, and shitting that would be stupid.  We should care about living and strive for a better life!!!  We need to have a little truth in us so we can at least have some dignity and respect for who we are as the human race!!  We are worth pure food, and water and air, and most of all medicine.  We shouldn't have to be sick and take drugs with horrible side effects that could eventually kill us.  Whats wrong with knowing the truth and standing and fighting for that.  Don't be mindless cattle and prove the "conspiracy theories" to be right!!!  We as humans, as brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers... we have the right to know both sides of the story.  Choose what you whish to perseve as true.... thats what we all do... just remember the water can be deeper than it appears.

I think all parents should vaccinate there children for the simple fact that these vacs have been keeping illnesses out of america for a long time as for it compramizing other children i agree i can't even enroll my son into school for the fact that other kids that are not vaccinated are attending an i can risk my sons heath for someone elses fear of vacs cuz it does affect all the kids not just one

Angela L Loxton Essenmacher

Elizabeth What about children like mine that have bad reactions to them should i keep vaccinating them just to protect your kid and risk killing my own. To me that is what you just stated. I shouldnt have to keep my kids from school because there bodies dont agree with the vax. and if you kid is vaccinated then its not your worry if my kid gets sick its mine.

pupukewahine...really do you even know what the prefix psuedo means? It means false so what your saying is that I'm showing false scienentific facts. That's utterly rediculas as everything I showed and stated came from a GOVERNMENT web site, the same government that you're supporting for creating the vaccines. Not to mention being a tax payer yes I have every right to contest any scientific fact the government or anyone else trys to shove down my throat seeing as those tax dollars are exactly what fund the research they claim to do on these vaccinations they put into our children. Also it was not Jonas Salk that recieved a nobel peace prize for creating the polio virus. It was a set of two drs that partnered together and discovered a way to cultivate the polio virus and THAT is what the recieved the nobel peace prize for not the production of the polio vaccine. Not to mention said vaccine was tested out on school children to ensure its safty in humans. It was not tested for safty in humans then administered to said children. The children WERE the test subjects. It's in the encyclopedia look it up yourself. That is not conspirecy theroy thats facts. Do you really trully believe that with all the instance that the government has admittly done testing on our own people that they would not continue to do it? If you do you can go right on ahead and live your life with your eyes closed to reality. I choose not to I choose to be FULLY infored.

GOOGLE is not a doctor! if you want to do your so called extensive personal research on vaccines take a microbiology class and many other bio classes , get a degree and then make your decision to NOT vaccinate. People in America these days are so misguided! its those that ARE NOT vaccinated that are causing these SERIOUS outbreaks like whooping cough to come back. sad sad sad.

Well, Christie, since I've been alive & healthy this long, I guess my reality is OK.  I can also run around looking for problems, blowing them way out of proportion, then spewing out my paranoia to everyone.  Or I can choose not to.  I guess since I'm so uneducated, I should just give up and let you guys tell us what to do.  Maybe I'll just wander into the kitchen now and make some Wonder Bread toast and spread contaminated Jiffy on it.  Maybe tonight to celebrate a family occasion I'll drive in my big politically incorrect gas guzzler to the chain (not local, how horrible!) pizza joint and have a (gasp!) soda with my pizza.  Us uneducated no-nothings gotta have fun, you know.  Do you know what fun is?  Or is this dangerous, too?  p.s. at least use spell check in the future so the rest of us really clueless yahoos can understand you.

Liz....very well said. Thats the point I've been trying to make all along. My child is vaccinated  up  to date, as I clearly stated in the very first sentence in the very first post I made on here. However as I continued to say in the very same post I believe that we are all entitled to be fully informed of the information that is out there though not readily made available to you with out it being pointed out to you or you wishing to dig yourself. Vaccines do have adverse affects though they may not be life threatening at that time and they may be more severe in some than others they are not as rare as they would have us to believe. For example my own mother has an autoimmune disease that is not hereditary it is 'enviromentaly' caused what are the 'possible' culprits? Aluminum exposure, mercury exposure...etc etc, coincidence? I really don't think so. As a result she cannot continue to work in the same line of work she always has. Had I had all the information that I currently have I would have made a different choice for my child. But I by no means would ever force my decision on anyone else though I will readily share the information with anyone and use every speck of information I have to defend any one who so choses not to vax.

Christy:  tell me why polio ran rampant throughout much of the western world a little more than half a century ago.  Tell me why it doesn't now.

I have spent years in the vaccinate v. non-vaccinate arena. All I can say is do your research.

Check out the CDC vaccine excipient list and think about what is being put into the body. http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkbook/downloads/appendices/b/excipient-table-2.pdf.

Next, realize that a 75 cent tax on EVERY vaccine (MMR vaccine = $2.25, etc...) is deposited into the Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund through which damages are paid to vaccine injured individuals as determined by the Office of Special Masters, US Federal Clams Court. (Since 1989, about $2 BILLION has been paid to injured individuals)

EDUCATE yourself before criticizing those who have legitimate concerns about vaccine safety and efficacy.
