Melissa Rycroft should be on top of the world right now. The former Bachelor star is absolutely killing it on Dancing With the Stars this season. But it sounds like the new mom has discovered one of the hard truths about being a mom: whether you work or stay at home, nothing is going to be perfect.
And she's got it doubly hard! This is Rycroft's first gig since she gave birth to little Ava last year, and she's decided to bring her baby to work with her.
Only it hasn't worked out as swimmingly as she planned. Rycroft has admitted to breaking down at least once. She even told Parade she's feeling like a "selfish" mom for going after the mirror ball trophy again:
It’s more difficult than we thought. Things work out on paper, and then it's just harder in real life. The reason it's hard is because this is the first big thing that I've done since I've had Ava, and I'm working through the feelings of feeling selfish for going back to work. Even though I'm only gone for five hours a day and she's at the studio in the green room and she's with me all the time, it's still new.
As a mom who has been there, done that, even wrote the manual, I can tell you exactly how it's going for Melissa right now.
Her friends are all swooning at what a lucky duck she must be to have the absolute best of both worlds! She gets to be a working mom out there doing her fabulous thing on TV and she gets to see her sweet little pumpkin pie any time she wants! How fabulous is that?
Well, it is pretty fabulous. I won't lie. I was blessed in the early years of my daughter's life to have a job that allowed me to take my daughter to daycare only two days a week. The rest of the time she was with me while I worked.
But didn't you learn anything in science class? Every action has an equal and inverse reaction or some such (seriously, it's been awhile since I took chemistry, so bear with me). That also means they all have their drawbacks.
Working with my daughter meant trying to plan work calls around her naps. It meant sometimes sitting with her on my lap banging on the keys of my computer while I tried to type out a story. It meant juggling a lot of balls in the air and dropping more than a few.
I know what Melissa means when she says she feels selfish, when she says she broke down. Because this take your kid to work thing isn't perfect. It sometimes means you're more tempted to go and be with them instead of work. It means when you are getting things done, you feel guilty for not spending time with your kiddo. And vice versa. But I look back on those years now, and I know that was the best thing for my family.
Whether you're working, not working, working with your kid, working without your kid you shouldn't feel selfish if it works for your family. Melissa Rycroft needs to give herself a break!
Did you ever feel like a selfish mom?
