Man Becomes New Dad, Grandpa & Great-Grandpa All in One Year

by Jeanne Sager on August 3, 2012 at 1:36 PM

baby footIt has been quite the year for Patrick Sloan. This year the Brit became a new dad. And a new grandpa. Oh yeah, and he also became a new great-grandfather.

Yes, all in one year. In fact, the 60-year-old father (and grandfather and ... well, you get the picture) had all this awesome baby news come at him in a matter of months. Three months, to be exact.

So how did this all happen? You might want to take notes to keep up with this one.

Here's the deal: Patrick's wife, Joanne (who happens to be 21 years his junior at 39 ... and his second wife), got pregnant. Then Patrick's 35-year-old daughter Odette announced she had a bun in the oven. And not much later, it came out that Odette's 18-year-old daughter Fern was going to be a teen mom.

Now there are several generations raising kids all at once. Which can be a little awkward at times, but it has turned out to be lifesaving for me at times.

My dad comes from one of those huge Catholic families. That means that his youngest sister was a teenager when I was born. Now we're both moms of young kids -- in fact the younger of my two first cousins isn't even a whole year older than my daughter -- and I can't even count the number of times I've leaned on her. She's my aunt, but she gets where I'm coming from in ways that other older relatives don't because she's having the same experiences I am at more or less the same time. Not to mention the cousins have a lot of fun when we get them together.

Congratulations to the Sloan family and their three new baby boys!

Do you know any multi-generational families raising kids at the same time? How does it work?

His grand-daughter perpetuating the cycle of teen pregnancy her mom started. Excellent.

i come from a multi generational family.  i have nieces and nephews who are older then me, the same age and babies.  The nieces/nephews who are my age  are more like my close cousins. .  Their mother is more like an aunt than a sister.

I know this is off topic but I hate it when 18 and 19 year olds get lumped into the teen pregnancy category as 13 and 14 year olds. How are 18 and 19 year olds who have already finished high school and are most likely in college any different then a 20 or 21 year old? I was 18 when I got pregnant but I was a licenced cosmetologist working full time at a salon. I am not saying it is a good thing to get pregnant so young or that you are automatically mature enough to become a great parent at 18 (there are plenty of people in their 20s that are still not mature enough to be parents!) but at 18 you are considered an adult.

My dad is 18 years younger then his oldest brother and 6 month older then his nephew, my cousin. They went to school together and he really enjoyed it. Like a brother he didn't have to live with (except my grandma definately treated her grandson as a grandson and my dad as her child. lol.)

My brother just became a grandfather at 35 by way of his 16yr old daughter that he had when he was 19. His daughter's mother is just 31 (she was 15 when she had my niece). So yes, thats a 31 yr old grandmother. With that side of the family's track record, my brother be a great granddad by his early 50s. All this sickens me.

I hate when people judge other people. You know you're not perfect. Look in the mirror before you start harping on people you don't even know. Can't just let this family have their blessings. Gotta say something negative. Well Congratulations Sloan family on your three blessings and good luck to you. You know, teen pregnancy isn't the best thing to happen to someone, but its not the worst. I'm not a teen mom, but you can bet if my daughter gets pregnant young, I am going to be there for her and support her and push her to finish school and get a degree and get a job to become independent and be able to support herself and her child.
