Mom Kicked Out of Kiddie Pool for Breastfeeding Her 10-Month-Old

by Jeanne Sager on July 16, 2012 at 11:59 AM

poolIt's never a good sign for society when a breastfeeding mom is told she has to stop nursing in public because some prude has their panties in a twist. But this one may be the worst yet. A Colorado mom was breastfeeding her 10-month-old son in the kiddie pool at a water park, and other parents wanted her to cover up or get out.

Let me get this straight. A nursing mom can't get some respect at a facility built specifically for parents and their kids. Is it any wonder they're getting picked on out at the courthouse or in the mall?

Charlotte Dirkes says she was breastfeeding 10-month-old Cillian in the kiddie pool at Pirate's Cove, a city-owned water park in Englewood, Colorado. The park attendant who told her to cover up or get out said they were responding to complaints from other patrons.

But who would those other patrons be? Wouldn't they be ... other parents? I mean, this was the kiddie pool, after all.

More from The Stir: Restaurant Manager Who Told Breastfeeding Mom to Cover Up Should Be Ashamed

As much as the whole thing makes me angry, considering nursing in public is a legally protected right, I'm even more sad.

Of all people, other parents should understand exactly how silly the anti-nursing prudes are. Of all people, other parents should understand how important it is that a mom be able to feed her kiddo in public. Of all people, other parents should want to support ... other parents!

This is one of those infuriating cases that really drives home why the mommy wars end up helping no one in the end. If moms are so busy sniping at each other, we are too disorganized and distracted to fight injustices against momkind.

And you better believe that it's a smack at all parents when one mom is denied her legal right to breastfeed her child in public. If we can't even give our kids nourishment in a way that nature provides for, then every other choice WE want to make as parents is up for public debate ... and public punishment.

What do you make of these others parents getting Dirkes in trouble?

This is becoming SO ridiculous.  Why should anyone have to cover their child up to feed them?  Our rights are protected by laws.  I hope the mother sat there & continued to nurse her baby.

I don't understand what the big deal is? Cover up. No one is saying you can't breastfeed in public, but the whole damn world does not want to see your boobs. Cover up and stop complaining.

I believe in the right to breast feed in public, and would never call it gross. But I feel a little torn about this. She was sitting in the pool feeding? That is kinda gross, but not for the breast feeding bit. It is a kiddie pool, think of the pee content of that water. Ew. But back to being asked to get out. I bet fewer people would have had an issue if she wasn't sitting in the pool, if perhaps she was sitting in a chair.

Whether you want to see it or not, its legal and maybe people who don't "want to see that" should just turn their prudish heads in the other direction.
Besides, wtf are you supposed to cover up with at a POOL?! Its hot! That baby would be getting heatstroke.

I don't think she should have had to cover-up, as I was never comfortable all covered in hot blankets and such when I breastfed my two, but in a pool? I can't imagine it was comfortable or safe (babies are slippery when wet). Why not move to a chair NEXT to the pool?

@SierraLynn, if, as you say, the whole world does not want to see your boobs, I hope that you habitually wear bathing dress dating from before the turn of the twentieth century.  After all, the world does not want to see YOUR boobs, either.

@SierraLynn - It is this attitude that is the problem.  She doesn't HAVE to cover up.  Her rights are protected by law.  She can bf in public with no coverage.  If you have a problem, don't look.  Simple as that.  She doesn't have to do anything different.

I'm a pretty modest person as it is. I have never worn a bikini. I typically wear a tankini that shows no cleavage and swim shorts while at the pool.
I have no problem with breastfeeding. I know breast is best and envy every woman who can breastfeed since I cannot due to under developed breast with minimal to no ducts for milk.
So yeah, I know the world doesn't want to see my boobs, and they never have/will besides my husband. Thanks.

I'm thinking the complaints had less to do with the fact that was breastfeeding than that she was breastfeeding IN the pool.  Someone else said they thought she'd have been left alone had she been feeding in one of the chairs around the pool and I'd have to agree.

I don't know why the writer got so angry. One, if she was in the water breastfeeding its technically bodily fluids in the pool that is not allowed. That's right all you people who pee in pools technically its not allowed because its unsanitary. Secondly, was she being discreet or did she just have both breasts bobbing out there and being righteous that she was breast feeding so she could be topless? I've wanted to ask women like that to cover up. There is nothing wrong breast feeding what's wrong is using it as an excuse to show off your breasts in public. Something I have seen done at pools before so the mom could attract some male attention. Thirdly, Our kiddie pool allows up to the age of 7. Meaning that's alot of little kids you are exposing your breasts too and alot of parents having to answer uncomfortable questions. Had she really been discreet I doubt there would have been a problem.
