Every day there are thousands of Americans sitting, waiting, hoping that they'll get the phone call that their baby is coming. They are the parents who want to adopt. It can drive people to desperation. And yet, I will never understand how a couple decided it would be a good idea to exchange their truck for a baby.
And yet, cops say Heather Kaminskey, 30, gave her newborn son to Jamiee and Jeremy Brown, and they gave her their truck. Now everyone involved is in deep trouble, and there's a little boy in the middle of it.
And yet, the cops also say the Browns took good care of the little boy. And considering cops say Kaminskey sold the truck she got for her baby in exchange for meth and some cash, they sound like they actually were better for him than staying with his biological mother. They say they wanted the little boy and just made a bad choice.
I can see the temptation. Every time someone suggests parents dealing with infertility "just adopt," it's like nails on the chalkboard for me. It isn't THAT easy. In some ways that's a good thing -- we don't want kids given willy nilly to couples who could be pedophiles or serial killers.
On the other hand, there are thousands of good, kind, wonderful people out there who can spend years waiting to adopt. That's why people get desperate. They do stupid things, like taking a baby from a drug addict in exchange for a truck. But in the end, everyone gets hurt.
In this horrible case, no one's a winner, least of all the child. The mother -- Kaminskey -- is facing actual criminal charges, as well she should if these allegations are true. And so are the Browns.
How long should parents have to wait until they can adopt? Is there any way to make this easier?

I agree with ponychaser. They should legally be allowed to keep the child.
Reading the article, comments, and other links, they recieved the baby 4 days after it was born, and did not give her the truck until 4 MONTHS later. Not a case of selling the baby or trafficking, people trying to do the right thing. We're fighting for my husbands half brothers half sister, who is 15, who we have cared for on and off for years and who we took in when her mother ran off to Texas (we're in SC). Now mom is back and demanded her kids (her daughter and my husbands half brother) who had homes, rooms, beds and love, so that she could qualify to get into the "nice" homeless shelter. Yeah, that's really classy. If I had the money to pay her to get out of our lives and leave the kids alone, I would. I think it's understandable, and that's not even what this family did. They took in a baby in need and then gave the mother a gift later on, which she proceeded to sell for cash and drugs.
The first is a home study needs to be done. This makes sure that the adoptive parents are able to care for the child. They check for medical, mental, financial ( you don't need to be rich ), most important is the criminal back ground checks. Also this mom was on meth ( that is not a habbit pick up after bith) I know what this does to a baby without the proper care this can have life long effects on this child as well as a baby coming off meth is at risk for child abuse due to the crying and these babies are physically in pain due to the drugs. The drugs coming out of their system causes their urine to burn the skin off their bottom no matter how fast you are with diaper changes..... This is all stuff that adoptive parents and a doctor need to work on together. Also most babies I cared for as a foster parent that the mom's had reflux and they could die it not cared for right....
There are want to be adoptive parents who can't pass the home study for many reason's to keep the child safe.
As well as many other reason's.
I am happy that this family took good care of this child. How very lucky we all are that it was not a perv who got their hands on the child.
Can't they investigate the Browns and if they are really great people, give the baby back?? People make mistakes, but this one seems to be done with good intentions. I know this was a terrible decision they made, but I can understand it and I also hate to think of that child getting stuck in foster care when there is already a couple who wants him. :(
Obviously, I agree with PonyChaser as well.
times are tough all over the judge should just order that the Browns get a lawyer to do it right and legal and really if they've been caring for the baby and doing a good job why shouldn't they keep the baby. Mom gave them the baby to care for knowing that she couldn't and was an unfit parent. So really what do we get putting the baby in foster care? The state pays for another child, the child loses a good home with parents that cared, and honestly the state could cut them some slack and do the background check and investigate the Browns for adoption while the child is in their home as it would be less disruptive to the child's emotional development.
Wo Wait just one minute, you mean to tell me that instead of this woman taking a selling her newborn baby to a drug dealer for drugs she traded it to a couple who wanted children mind you for a truck. This couple in my eyes prevented this baby from being killed, I do not see how this couple could face criminal charges for rescuing a newborn baby. I can see how the natural mother would face charges, but we do have to cut this woman some slack, she gave this baby to someone who was will to give up their truck for a baby if that is what it took, instead of killing the baby like some of these other people have done. How is this justice? Atleast these people took really good care of the baby and the police were not called to retrieve the body of the newborn from the mothers drug dealer or worst yet the dumpsite where they could have left it. God forbid someone care enough to get a baby out of the situation that it is in when its life is in danger, no wonder people don't want to get involved when a parent or parents girlfriend/boyfriend, grandparents or what ever harms a child. I have to commend this couple for doing what they did and Pray that everything works out to where they want face criminal charges and are allowed to legally adopt this baby.
wow - pedophiles and serial killers reproduce every day, willy nilly - adoption is a money-grubbing business, these people just cut out the middle men
