Parents Arrested for Smuggling Baby Boy Through Airport in Mom's Purse

by Jeanne Sager on July 10, 2012 at 9:25 AM

baby Airport screening officials must have had the shock of their lives when they sent a mother's handbag through the x-ray machine the other day. The scanner showed a 5-month-old baby boy! Let me repeat this so it will sink in: someone actually thought it was a good idea to put an infant in a purse and send him through airport scanners.

Folks, Paris Hilton carries her dog in a handbag. You do NOT, under any circumstances, put a baby in one! And yet, that's what airport officials say an Egyptian man and his wife did in order to smuggle their baby.

I've been wracking my brain, trying to summon some sympathy for these people, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it's not working out well.

The parents are now in deep trouble in the United Arab Emirates, where they were first stopped by airport officials because their baby didn't have any official documents. According to police, the couple allegedly waited for a shift change, stashed their poor child in the bag, and tried to get into the country once again, apparently thinking that no one would notice the living, breathing human being inside mom's purse.

Stuffing him in a handbag is, of course, the worst part of all of this -- I don't even want to think about what could have happened to the poor little guy. But the fact is, if all of this is true, they've treated this baby like a non-human from the get-go. The mere fact that they tried to fly him into the country without the proper paperwork means they were treating him more like a piece of luggage than a child. Here in America most moms apply for a birth certificate and a Social Security card before we even leave the hospital! And they did nothing?

Parents shouldn't have to be reminded that a baby is just as important as someone who can speak for themselves, but every day we see those parents-to-be who think that they will be able to live their lives exactly as they did before the birth. Let this be your big, fat wake-up call: that baby is a human being, with wants and needs. You can't just stuff them in your purse when they get annoying.

What do you make of this whole baby smuggling scandal?

I'm assuming that by "legal documents" they would mean something like a passport, not just a simple birth certificate.
If they went as far as to attempt to smuggle a baby, maybe they were trying to leave quickly for a reason. Maybe they were in danger, and afraid for their lives.
Not everything is so black and white to where putting baby in purse = treating it like a non-human, bad parents! They might have felt desperate for one reason or another. Until the entire story comes out, maybe harsh judgement should be reserved.

Oh, and I know the link mentioned how badly the mother wanted to give birth in Egypt, but at the same time, I can't imagine anyone, with a Visa, who was given permission to wait until the passport office opened, would try something so extreme out of simple impatience.
I honestly feel they may have a good reason that hasn't come out yet.

Agreed, the4mutts. I'm hesitant to pass judgment because I honestly feel there may be a good reason they took such desperate measures.

Not every country makes it so easy to get legal paperwork for children. I have no clue what the process is there, but they may have been prevented from getting paperwork to make the child able to legally travel.

I saw this on a news site. Apparently the parents went to Egypt because they wanted to have the baby there and then tried to return home. The problem was that they didnt have a passport for the baby so they came up with the crazy idea of trying to sneak him in.

I am not sure how much radiation is emitted from airport scanners but as a licensed limited xray machine operator I am also aware of how unsafe radiation can be at high levels, especially on little ones who are still growing. Too much radiation can kill you, high levels can also make you sterile or give you cancer. And of course not to mention a 5 month old in a bag could have suffocate!. I don't know the whole story but I still think what they did wasn't right. They were being negligent even if they had a reason. Parents that leave their kids home alone or in a car alone have their own "reasons" too. There's no excuse!

IN america, sure, you apply for paperwork while still in the hospital. I'm so glad for Americans. In other parts of the world, 1 - hospital, what hospital? 2 - paperwork? Only if you have the $$ to pay big bribes. 3 - paperwork? Hope you can read. 4 - Desperately trying to get a baby to change countries? Maybe running from danger, maybe trying to prevent, or in the process of, baby-selling? Loads of potential reasons. Please, to all the Americans who read this stuff, you cannot judge the other 6.5 BILLION people by your standards. The rest of the world is different. Open your eyes.

I'm thinking there's more to the story.
