Stranger Rescues Baby From Train Tracks in the Nick of Time

by Jeanne Sager on June 27, 2012 at 12:33 PM

subwayIf you hate those "it takes a village to raise a child" kind of stories, you might not want to read this one. Wait! Come back! You're probably the person who really needs to read about the 9-month-old baby whose stroller was swept off a New York City subway platform. A stranger saved the little boy just before a train would have run him over.

You may not believe that moms can do it all by themselves. I'm glad there are guys like good Samaritan Delroy Simmonds who will jump into action when life gives us more than we can handle.

People commenting on the New York Post article about Simmonds' heroic actions seem to want this poor mother's head on a platter. How dare she not be holding tight to that stroller! How dare she not anticipate the wind gust that would come along and set the stroller rolling right onto the subway tracks.

But I feel for her. She had four kids to tend to, and she forgot to set the brake on her baby boy's stroller.

If you are going to tell me that you have always, without fail, set that stroller brake, I'm going to ask that you share whatever it is you are smoking ... because that must be some goooooood stuff.

OK. OK. Maybe it wasn't the stroller brake. Maybe it was your baby's favorite stuffed animal that fell in the store, and it took a kindly customer to notice and rescue that blessed bunny. Or you were out at the county fair, only to realize you had no sunblock to speak of, and some other mom out there had to lend you some of hers?

Parents may be kids' chief providers and the most important people in their lives, but it's all those good Samaritans out there, whether they're going as far as jumping in front of a train or just lending you a tube of sunblock, who help get our kids to adulthood. Thank goodness they're there.

When has a stranger helped you out with your kids?

Its nice to know there are still people that care about other people. I read a quote he said that "he was just being a father and would do it for any baby". WHat a sweetheart. I also read he was on his way to a job interbiew when this happened, and he ended up missing the rtain and the interview. I really really hope that someone who can help him out will.

This story makes me smile!  So glad there are still hero's out there like this man.  It's so often that we only hear about the villins.  This man needs a cape.

What an amazing person.. hope he gets the job (which I'm sure he will) and he deserves a medal. Also, I feel for the mom.. we've all been there; overwhelmed, flaky, having an off day. She should not be demonized because it could happen to anyone and she got lucky and I'm sure she feels she owes her life to this man.

look this kind of stuff happens i have 3kids and there as been times that i had a hold of them and they still got hurt in muh arms like when muh 7 year old was under a year old i had him in arms with a tight grip and he managed to jump out of muh arms and busted his lip on a table. i hate when ppl who dont have children say stuff about mothers who do their best to protect their young and i think some ppl forget that mothers are humans too and we all make mistakes

I applaud this man for his quick action and selfless thinking.  As for the mom, I am sure she is beating herself up worse than  any asshole critic could...we should be lifting this mother up right now and let her know she isn't alone in mtoherhood and being a human being.  shit happens people, even to the most "responsible" parents...Let's all just give praise and thanks to God for that awesome man being there and doing the right thing.

You know this is amazing! I read all kinds of bad things that happen to children and it's so refreshing to hear about a complete stranger that would put his life on the line for a child that he doesn't know. you rock
