Poor Hilary Duff. The new mom got a rare night out with her husband Mike Comrie at Rock N Reilly's Pub in West Hollywood, and the paparazzi was there to document her naughty mama moment. Turns out baby Luca's mom hasn't given up on her cigarette habit.
Eek. That doesn't exactly scream "mama has got it together," does it?
Hold up, I am not calling Hilary a bad mom. Her son was nowhere around when she lit up her cancer stick. But what she has done is a pretty common "new mom mistake."

Moms figure that on their off hours, they can smoke. Makes sense, right? No baby around to suck in secondhand smoke. No baby around to see mommy doing something naughty and ape it. I don't fault her. Because this IS a common new mom mistake, and the science that tells us it's a mistake at all is new too.
But I'm still going to burst her bubble. Even without your baby in the vicinity, smoking is bad for baby. Ever heard of thirdhand smoke? It's new. But it's also real. And it's scary. Scientists say the carcinogens in cigarette smoke actually follow you from your grand night out without the baby back home to snuggle time. Even if you're a fab celeb like Hilary Duff, you can't escape it because it can settle in your clothes and cling to your body.
Kids don't have to be right there sucking in the fumes of your ciggy to get sick. The stuff that sticks to your apparel and wafts out of your hair is toxic enough. the exact effects are still being studied, but they say it's not good.
Here's hoping a little education is enough to make this mama kick the habit for good.
How about you? Do you smoke when the baby isn't around?

We have moms driving their children into creeks. We have moms taking their children with them to turn tricks. We have moms breastfeeding their children while taking serious drugs. We have moms who "accidentily" feed their kids rum in their formula. Oh wait. Those moms arent famous. Lets give them sympathy while we judge Hilary for her faux pas. Mmmmmmhmmm. Sounds about right -_-
I have to laugh and anyone on this site who gets peeved at the bloggers for writing their opinions. Or people who are expecting some sort of news story. This is a blog site. Not the New Yorker.
@06katc08, there are plenty of things your OB didn't tell you they should have. They are in it for the money. Maternity is the hospitals number 1 money maker. They are going to tell you what you want to hear to keep you coming back to have more of your babies. Sad but true for a lot of ob/gyns.
Also, those people who say they smoke and have kids are taking chances. There are serious risks even with 3rd hand smoke. Yeah, your kids could end up okay. but they could also end up really not okay. You may as well just let them play unsupervised in the street at night or let them sleep over at Sandusky's house. And there is a huge difference between the uncontrollable (pollution and whatnot that sticks to your clothes) and your CHOICE to contaminate and expose your family to toxins. Of course you have your right to smoke. What about your kid's right to thrive? I don't know about everybody else, but I TRY to do the best by my kids. I don't raise my kids with the "They'll survive" attitude. I may fail at some points, but at least I am doing my best.
What a douche,...not Hilary, you.
I hate cigarettes and can't stand to be around someone smoking and think she should quit, but give her a break! She actually had a night out with her hubby and they were at a pub, she probably had some drinks. A lot of people only smoke when they've been drinking. This whole "thirdhand smoke" thing is crazy. The article admits they don't know of any specific effects and like others have said she probably changed and showered before "snuggling" her baby. Also regarding breast milk and smoking. Even though it's true that cigarette smoking could affect breast milk, the benefits of the breast milk still outweight not breastfeeding.;
Sure do and I rarely cuddle up with my baby smelling like smoke.
this is one of the stupidest things i have ever heard. next people will just put gas masks on their kids all the time, god forbid they breath withe the car windows open on the freeway. better yet lets just put all children in plastic bubbles.
