I remember my first Bumbo. I propped up my tiny baby inside so I could take cute photos of her without her falling over. Sure I put it on top of the dining room table. Until I learned later that you really weren't supposed to do that. I didn't leave the room, and I was incredibly lucky that my baby didn't suffer a skull fracture due to my own stupidity. But not everyone was so lucky.
When the first cries went out about recalling the Bumbo seats, I thought, like many people, that it was kind of ridiculous that people are complaining about their baby being injured when they either left a baby alone, or put a baby in a Bumbo on top of the kitchen cabinet. We don't recall everything because someone is just not swift enough to read the directions (myself included in this assessment).
But now Bumbo is under attack again, and this time I'm kind of wondering if those cute little chairs might have been a bad idea, even when used properly.
More from The Stir: 5 Baby Items Totally Worth Splurging On
In addition to the 45 injuries to babies whose parents were not using the Bumbo seat correctly, other accidents are being reported when babies fall out of those things when they're sitting on the ground. Yikes. I mean, there's not a five-point harness on those things, which is why they're so cute. It's like a big blob of soft. So babies could wobble on out of the little chair right onto the floor.
A Bumbo spokesperson points out that there are also injuries due to new crawlers, walkers, and just rolly-polly babies. This is true. But if you put your baby in a chair, you kind of expect her to stay there, restraining device, or not.
Hopefully you don't leave your baby alone when she's sitting up in a Bumbo, or anywhere. Freak things can occur, and babies have zero sense of how to NOT injure themselves. Also, they can't talk. Vigilance is important, as are safe items that you put your baby into. Maybe this isn't the greatest idea for the little ones, after all.

I loved it for my daughter (who is now almost 4), but not my son (who is 7 months). My daughter would just sit it and enjoy sitting in it. She didn't really move aorund in it and was just content to be sitting upright. My son, on the other hand, would not sit still in it. He would always arch his back and if we hadn't been sitting right there with him with our hands on the Bumbo, he would have flipped out the back. I would never leave a baby unattended in a Bumbo, but that doesn't mean I want to have to keep my hands on the Bumbo the whole time to make sure he stays in safely. So, we got rid of it. So not worth it.
There should probably be a mass recall of Common Sense handed out, starting in the 1960's, rather than recalling all of these products that suddenly eject our babies, or eat them, or otherwise force themselves upon them. It would be much cheaper and much more efficient.
I liked our Bumbo. I still do, and I'm keeping it around for future offspring. It's a great little seat, very soft, and my kiddos loved it. Of course, I didn't put it on top of the kitchen counter, our bed, the TV, dining room table, etc. Mostly because I figured...hey...what if they fall? I know, I know. Crazy.
Of course, we also had a drop side crib. I just figured if I put it together correctly, you know - following the directions - it would be fine. And when DS2s didn't seem to be locking in place anymore, we just screwed it together. Again...like....total common sense, testing our products and making sure we were using them safely.
Next they'll start recalling all high chairs because OMG what if my baby stands up in it and falls out??? Oh....babies have already done that? Must have real attentive parents.
I guess those of us who aren't idiots keep having to suffer for the mistakes of the masses.
I wish the moms of the western world would sort of "wake up" and realize that all of these things are ridiculous and unecessary. All you need is a sling for the times you are not in the car, and a car seat when you are in your car...nothing else, and baby will develop beautifully...does anyone question why there are so many obese babies and babies with health issues and babies with developmental delays????? Let them be in your arms or in a sling and their muscles develop beautifully... these ridiculous chairs or for the sake of the parents and not the baby.
I loved the bumbo seat, especially for my preemie who was delayed in sitting up on his own. It let him play sitting upright. You shouldn't expect your baby to stay anywhere you put them, bumbo seat or not.
I think common sense has A LOT to do with these numbers. Who on earth would sit the child on a table and then so much as turn their back? ....recall the parents not the seat...
