Last night I had a dream that my baby drowned. Scary stuff. Turns out I'm not the only one on CafeMom who's been dreaming about her kid. There was a thread in Stay at Home Moms "I left my 9-monthold in the car alone while I ran into Starbucks," in which everyone shared their recent dreams and they were every bit as frightening as mine.
It's a private group so I don't want to share the specifics, but I'll give you the gist. Babies were left in cars, kidnapped, in plane crashes, left in stores. And a lot of Baby Mamas woke up feeling terrible.
I was wondering what these nightmares could possibly mean so I went to dreammoods.com.
I checked out what drowning symbolized and it said, "To see someone drowning in your dream represents a loss in your own identity. You are unable to differentiate who you are any more." I beg to differ. I know exactly who I am: I'm my baby's mother!
To dream that someone has been kidnapped indicates that you are not letting aspects of that person be expressed within you. You are trying to supress qualities of the kidnapped person.
It also seems that a baby is a common dream symbol and according to the site, there are different interpretations depending on what the baby is doing.
To see a baby in your dream signifies innocence, warmth, and new beginnings.
To find a baby in your dream suggests you have found your hidden potential.
If you forgot you had a baby in your dream, you might be trying to hide your vulnerabilities.
If you dream of a crying baby, part of yourself needs some nuturing or you feel you lack something in your life.
If you dream that a baby is neglected, it suggests you are not paying attention to yourself.
To dream about a starving baby indicates that you are experiencing a deficiency in your life that needs immediate attention.
To see a dead baby in your dream symbolizes the end of something that is a part of you.
To dream of an extremely small baby symbolizes your feelings of helplessness.
A baby carriage shows your desire for a family or longing for a baby.
Having a baby suggests that you are giving birth to a new project or idea.
If you dream of baby shoes and you have a baby, it means the baby has grounded you.
Anyway who knows what this all means, but I definitely don't think it means any of us is a bad parent, which is what some of the Baby Mamas on the thread feared. If you're interested in dream interpretation, there are several groups devoted to the subject such as Dream Analysis, Dreams, Dreaming & What It Means, and Colours and Dreams.

I am always dreaming that I go out and leave the baby at home while he/she is napping. I always wake up horrified b/c that is something I would never do. I wonder if that falls in the "neglected" baby dream category?
i think sometimes our dreams have alternate meanings but they are not always described by a dream book. sometimes the tree really is just a tree because you looked at it right before you fell asleep and now it's in your dream you know?
but in this case, i think the dreams about our children being hurt are just our everyday fears as mothers. we never stop worrying, even when we are sleeping.
