Does This Bear Make My Butt Look Fat?Another study about babies and weight is out, and yes, again it's a "duh" moment. Apparently thin parents make thin children. Yes. It's totally true. Your genetic material is passed on to your children when you're growing the little babies in your womb. Who knew?
We all knew.
Of course we need to focus on healthy eating. Of course we need to set a good example by eating well in front of our kids. But obviously if we tend to store the fat, or shed it easier, our kids could have these same traits. You know what else your baby might inherit from you?
- Brown eyes
- A short temper
- Artistic talent
- A smart mouth
- A love for cheese
- Math ability
- A crooked nose
Basically, EVERYTHING.
So I'm not sure exactly why this study was done, since it seems obvious. And why are we talking about weight, when it comes to babies, anyway? Should we really be pinching baby rolls or shaking our heads over the little guy's tiny tush?
Of course if your baby isn't thriving, you want to find out why and make sure he's getting the proper nutrition. But rolly-polly babies can be incredibly healthy, unless you're giving a 9-month-old candy and sticks of butter. (You're not, are you?) Tiny babies can also simply be shaking what their mama gave them -- which is not much.
Obsessive monitoring of your child's weight is unhealthy. Let's just enjoy them, at every size, and stop trying to get one of those skinny babies, 'kay?
Do you think this study is as ridiculous as I do?

I sometimes wonder if the people who do these studies ever think about just how ridiculus they are going to sound presenting this to the public. I agree, you should watch what you eat, and teach your children good life habits, but spending money on why babies are "fat/skinny" get real!! I just hope it wasn't my taxes that paid for it. I know that scientists need work, but where was the oversight comittee on this one?
I dont understand why we are doing further studies since its really common sense really....but I understand the premise. If you have a tiny child who is "underweight" the doctor should look at the parents. My life is case and point. I am very short and petite...my son is tall and petite...my husband is tall and muscular. So, my son takes after me in the skinny department...so my doctor wasn't AS worried about his weight issues. He's following his own curve :).
When are people going to realize that genetics are only responsible for so much? If you want thin kids (and I certainly do) then don't let them be couch potatoes or let them eat junk food. My kids eat faily well and they are active little buggers. Sometimes we send them outside and don't let them come back in for a set amount of time.
I want my son to be chubbier. He's skinny. I have always worried about his weight. His peditrician said he is tall like his dad and myself. Also thin like me but he eats a ton. So I worry why he doesn't get chubbier. I have a cousin who is very overweight. Her daughter is overweight too because she feeds her a lot of fast food. I have a rule that I let my son eat what I eat. I eat healthy so he does. Maybe that's why he is thin.
I totally disagree with this, children can inherit traits, but don't always. My girls so far have inherited my blonde hair and blue eyes, but my older daughter was a very big baby. So much so that the pediatricians actually told me to cut back on her breastfeeding! And I'm a very petite person, I was asked on many occassions if she was even my child because I'm a petite person.
I have two skinny, skinny little boys. I am (and always have been) a big girl, but my hubby is tall and skinny. It HAS to be genetic!!! I feed them both what we eat and we eat a healthy diet (lots of veg, fruit, whole grains and lean meat) and they are both healthy and VERY active. One of my boys will not eat ANYTHING!!! I beg, plead, tempt and cry. Nope, he won't eat. He is the one who is in the 90th percentile for height. My other son eats anything that isn't nailed down and is the one that has fallen off the growth chart to the point WIC actually made me go see a nutritionist and his doctor is currently running tests on him. Like I said though, they both have lots of energy, are very smart and rarely get sick. Not gonna worry too much...lol...they are just like daddy!
Im naturally thin. I was an average weight baby-thin-child-thin teenager.
My man went from super chubby baby to thin child to chubby child, chubby teenager then thin teenager after his Mother put him on a diet in his teenage years, since his Mother was a chubby baby and overweight teenager, and shes now a thin adult, she does not excercise, and she barely has to walk around, she uses public transport to get around,or her Son/s cars to transport her, her groceries and any of her items.
