New Mom Secret: My Baby Is Always Barefoot

It's hard being a new mom (or even an experienced mom to a new baby) and sometimes we do things we know we shouldn't, despite what all the experts say. But this is a safe place to share your secrets (PM me)—we'll never tell.

This Week's Secret:

My daughter is 4 months old now and I have never put shoes on her feet. She was born in early May and it was gorgeous outside, so I never bothered with them. I know a lot of people are really into the cute little baby shoes, and I have one friend who has made pointed comments about how "a baby is never fully dressed without shoes," but I feel like she is a baby! She can wear shoes later! Am I wrong? — Anonymous

Nope. You are not wrong.

That whole "no shoes, no shirt, no dice" thing? That is for grown-ups. It isn't for babies. Your friend needs to chill. Let your baby be shoeless and enjoy it. Once she starts walking, it's a whole other discussion.

Do you have any advice for this mom?

I never put shoes on my children in the winter (Until I had a daughter and she ended up with TONS of shoes as gifts).  Shoes are pointless on an infant and they just fall off anyway.  Find some good socks that will stay on baby's feet for the cold weather, and that is all you need!

my son didn't wear shoes or socks until he could walk. unless it was winter then he wore them. otherwise i don't see the point putting shoes or socks on someone who can't walk.

babies dont need shoes. I liked the cutsie shoes and everytime I would put them on my daughter she would look so uncomefortable, so I quit with it. BAby doesnt need shoes till they start walking and then keep the shoes sleek  and thin so they dont get into baby's way. I made that mistake by getting big bulky tennis shoes as my daughter's first shoes and they tripped her and she couldnt walk well in them.

I don't put shoes on my babies EVEN in winter. If we're going out, I just throw an extra blanket around their feet and tuck it in around their carseat. If they are out of the carseat, they are in the sling, so I tuck the blanket around their toes there too. I get dirty looks sometimes when I am switching them over, but my kids are like me, they HATE shoes and socks, so its not worth the effort or money to replace lost socks. Everyone needs to do what they think is best.

when my daughter was little we lived in San Diego, she never wore shoes. ever. I think she was like a year before a shoe was on her foot. maybe 10 months, when she started walking. probably not though.

I don't put shoes on my son unless it's winter. They are so cute, but right now he's at the age where he'll take them off, so I figure what's the point? lol.

Shoes are a waste of money for kids who aren't mobile. My advice- if it's chilly put socks on if it's not don't.

I dont put shoes on my son but if its chilly i put socks on him during the winter i do put shoes on. I feel like some shoes make him uncomfortable. at home he is always barefoot. I read that sometimes infat shoes dont allow the feet to develop well.

Structured shoes can be harmful to an infant's growing feet.  There is absolutely no reason for them on teeny feet.  Let the girly be barefoot!

According to "the grandmas" my kids have wide feet because I refused to shoe them until they were well into "cruising". I didn't think they needed them and would hinder their learning to walk. Still don't believe them.
