Bryan Adams First Baby Proves Men Have It Easier

Sasha Brown-Worsham

Canadian rocker Bryan Adams had a daughter earlier this week, making him a first-time father at the age of 51. His new little girl is named Mirabella Bunny Grimaldi Adams and weighed 7 pounds.

Mirabella’s mother was Adams’s personal assistant, Alicia Grimaldi, 31. A friend told The Daily Mail:

Bryan and Alicia are absolutely thrilled. And Bryan couldn't be happier. I have no doubt he will make an absolutely wonderful father.

I am thrilled for the happy couple, of course. Having a baby is wonderful and being a parent is the best thing in the world. You will, however, note the 20 year age difference between Adams and his baby's mother. Alas, men have all the time in the world to embark on this little miracle and women? Do not.

It is one of those unfair facts of reproduction. By the time we turn 35, the likelihood that we will conceive and carry a baby safely starts to decline and decline until it is practically nil around our mid-40's (without major assistance). It is not fair.

So, while it is thrilling any time anyone becomes a new parent, it is also a reminder of the cruelties of biology when it comes to women and men. Men can father babies into their 80's. They do not have that biological clock or the need to settle for a less-than-suitable partner just so they can pop out babies before the timer goes off.

In the 1980's, Adams was rocking out with Princess Diana (for whom he wrote a song in 1984) and model Elle Macpherson and now he has all the time in the world to settle into family life and make his first baby.

It is an exciting time in life, to be sure and I wish the new father all the happiness in the world, but it is too bad his lady friend did not also have the luxury of 20 more years to live it up before becoming a mama.

Biology can be a brat.

Do you ever get mad at how unfair this is?
