Happy new baby to one of my favorite actresses from Down Under, United States of Tara actress Toni Collette, who gave birth to son Arlo on Friday! This isn't Collette's first go-round at motherhood -- daughter Sage was born in 2008 -- which is one of the reasons I'm counting on Collette to keep the usual celeb post-baby body madness in check.
I don't know about you, but I am sick to death of hearing about how incredible shrinking starlets like Miranda Kerr, Heidi Klum, Kourtney Kardashian, and the rest go from frumpy to flat-bellied before their infants are ready to start solids. First of all, these women have an unfair advantage or two; namely, personal trainers, private chefs, and full-time nannies. Secondly ... who cares?? "Hi, I just brought a new life into the world, but don't give me any props for that -- check out my magically restored perky butt!"
I'm hoping that Collette has a more sane perspective on this sort of thing, given her own history with weight battles. She developed bulimia trying to lose the 44 pounds she put on for Muriel's Wedding, only to gain another 30 pounds to play the plain Jane sister of Cameron Diaz in In Her Shoes. Collette must know that her career is based on a lot more than looks.
My fantasy magazine cover? Toni Collette and Tina Fey, babes in arms, with the headline: "Celeb Moms Talk 'Brain After Baby.'"
Does the "body after baby" obsession get on your nerves?
