Mariska Hargitay, star of Law & Order: SVU, and her husband Peter Hermann have announced that they have added a new baby girl to their family. They join the stealth baby celebrity trend in which one minute they have no baby, and then all of a sudden, they do. First there was Sandra Bullock, then Nicole Kidman, and now Hargitay.
They adopted her from the United States and have named her Amaya Josephine. Based on her picture, she's gorgeous. She joins big brother August, 4, and was born about a week ago. The whole family is ecstatic. Hargitay told People:
I'm deliriously happy. From the minute she was born, she was just surprisingly alert and so full of love.
She also talked about how they're now a "multi-racial" family:
We were considering both international and domestic adoption and we're thrilled that this is the way our prayers were answered. We talked a lot about mixed-race adoptions, and we are very excited that we are now a multi-racial family. We're just so happy she's here.
When it came to choosing a name for the little princess, it was a family project. Hargitay liked Maya, but wanted something a little different.
I liked that name, but I wanted her to have the same initials as August. I thought adding the 'A' was so feminine. Amaya sounded so open and feminine and beautiful -- just like her.
While the announcement came as a surprise, another child for the family wasn't totally surprising as she's talked in recent years about being open to more children. At 47 having a biological child wasn't very likely, so adoption makes sense.
In any case, it's a wonderful surprise. What a lucky little girl to be born into such a loving and talented family. Congratulations to them all.
