Probably a shocker for many, but Kourtney Kardashian seems to be an attachment parent -- and a really great mom. Not only did she talk about how much she loved co-sleeping with her son Mason, but she's discussed many times how important and enjoyable breastfeeding is to her -- even when her sister immaturely insults her for her opinion.
But now Kourtney has weaned 15-month-old Mason, something she talks about as bittersweet.
Kourtney has shared that she had a rough start to nursing, and her original goal was just to give it a shot and see what happened. After working out the kinks, she grew to love it and so did Mason. Then she gave herself a goal of six months. Then when she hit that, she said twelve months.
At a year, she introduced cow and goat milk ("Organic, of course") and unfortunately, the "When are you going to wean him?" comments set in. Mason was down to night-nursing only at 13 months, so she decided to try to cut those out.
With some advice about cabbage leaves and suffering through some pain, she decided that her hurting breasts and Mason's crying just weren't natural, and if he still wanted it, she was going to let him nurse. But after that, he really only nursed a couple more nights, and would tug on her shirt a little at night (yep, she's still co-sleeping). Then he just didn't ask anymore, and she didn't offer -- a technique aptly named "Don't Offer, Don't Refuse."
Kourtney says:
My love affair with breastfeeding is over. I seriously could cry just thinking about it being over. I love what a beautiful experience I had with my son and just wanted to share it.
Weaning is a bittersweet thing for many moms, and many end up regretting it if they chose to end the nursing relationship. In a country where very few women make it even to a year, I'm really, really impressed that Kourtney made it to 14 months with Mason and is so vocal about it. I'm disappointed to hear that she had pressure to stop nursing as soon as he hit his birthday, and that it affected her decision as well, but regardless, she gave Mason a great start and a healthy childhood thanks to her choices.
And I have to add ... when they're still co-sleeping, it can be nice to have them be willing to cuddle without wanting to nurse.
Props, Kourtney. It's bittersweet, but you did great!
Are you surprised she made it this long?

exactly how i did it w/ my last baby. well, minus the co-sleeping, this was the 1st of 4 kids that actually slept in their own crib!
good for her for being vocal about it.
i didn't even know she was bf'ing lol, good for them
Who cares how long she made it?! lol sorry there should be more important things to worry about!
Extended breastfeeder? I wouldn't call her that until she has breastfed 2 years or more. But at least she was able to nurse him that long. That's good.
I am surprised, especially with the environment she lives in. Good for her!!
WOW.. wonder if those "comments" started with her uneducated sister? Glad she made it that long.. in our country it usually just doesn't happen :) Too bad she had so much pressure and fell for the booby trap though :( Incredibly sad.. especially since she and the babe enjoyed it so very much. *sigh*... why can't folks just leave breastfeeding mothers ALONE!?!?!?!
I totally agree with Kimberly Wood : )
And GO Kourtney! Im so glad she had such a great experience!
This is a good thing for Kourtney - it seems like she is really growing up now that she's a mom. Now if we can only slip Scott a magic maturity pill....
