My baby daughter is really freakin' cute, but that doesn't mean I'm going to dress her like a doll. Sure, she's got long lashes and shapely lips that will someday look gorgeous with a little mascara and lipstick, but the key word is someday.
While searching for a christening gown, I recently stumbled upon a bunch of websites with tutu dresses.
These elaborate little gowns -- which involve everything from feathers and crystals to yards of tulle and, to my horror, halter tops -- look like they came right off the Toddlers & Tiaras catwalk. And they're modeled on babies who aren't old enough to sit up!
Where, other than a beauty pageant, is my daughter going to wear a massive pink tutu? Grandma's house? A play date? I assume (at least I hope!) the purpose of such a costume is just to take cute pics like the one above and share them with friends and family members.
Now, when my daughter is at an age where she can pick out her own clothes and so desires to wear a tutu, I won't deny her. Heck, if she wants to wear a three-piece suit and a fedora, that's totally cool with me. But there's just something too adult about a halter top affixed to a tutu. It veers into creepy baby pageant territory.
For the near future, it's onesies and sleepers for my little one. And if I change my mind about that, well, there's always tutu onesies!
Would you put your infant in a tutu dress?

Yeah halters are definitely weird, but frilly tutus are frickin frackin adorable! I understand not everyone has the same frilly girly taste but it's definitely not weird creepy baby pageant territory. My daughter is going to wear a full on red white and blue pettiskirt when her daddy comes home from his deployment and I personally can't wait to see her strut her stuff.
"Babies Do Not Belong in Tutu Dresses" what an ignorant, arrogant opinion-based "article" this is. Sounds like a "journalist" just trying to start a fight. I'm disappointed in myself for even clicking into it.
I wanted to make an outfit for my daughter's first birthday to go with her "under the sea" theme. I don't have a clue when it somes to sewing so I made her a no-sew tutu which was super easy. It was made of blues and greens and matched her onesie which I ironed beautiful blue sequined fish to. I thought it made a pretty memorable outfit. We also had portraits taken of her in a tutu at 6 months. I think it's just an alternative to the naked baby photos that are classic, especially in black and white. It gives it a little something extra. I am by no means a girly mom, and my daughter is even further from girly. She plays with trains and wears mostly black and gray, but I still love the idea of a tutu:)
I think you should lighten up. Its just meant to be a cute way to take photos. My daughter has a few and she is 11. She wears them sometimes to play over her jeans or just to play in.
@annie jack- I agree!! They look crazy!! Im glad someone agrees lol
It's not like they can wear a tutu when they are older. It's cute for babies!
Tutu's are adorable... my 2 year old daughter loooooves to run around the house in one and has occasionally worn it to the store or to Grammys house for fun... or lack of energy for me fight with her to take it off... but a halter would be a little much for just a random tuesday... unless maybe covered with a cute sweater... or on a hot summer day!!!
Why not? As long as there is nothing for them to pick off and choke on -they can even feel the different fabric and texture and could be a learning experience. I think they can be cute.
