20 Names I Would Never Give My Baby

Babynames.com has released their list of the 20 most popular names for 2010 and it is the list I view as my personal Do Not Name List.

It is not that the names are bad. They are perfectly fine, featuring the usual round-up of Aidan and Olivia. This year, Sophia is the new number one. It is a beautiful name, but it would not come within 10 feet of my child's birth certificate.

I like the idea of my children having unusual names. Not weird, mind you, but not the same one every other child has. Case in point: there are two Sophias in my daughter's preschool class alone. I really don't want her going through life known as "Big Sophia" because the other two are slightly smaller.

I say this from expereince having known two "Big Kristis" back in the day. Can you imagine?

So, while these names are perfectly lovely, I consider this the top 20 list of names I will never give to my child.

They include:

  1. Sophia
  2. Charlotte
  3. Ava
  4. Addison
  5. Olivia
  6. Amelia
  7. Lilly
  8. Isabella
  9. Chloe
  10. Bailey

  1. Aiden
  2. Liam
  3. Noah
  4. Jackson
  5. Ethan
  6. Caden
  7. Mason
  8. Logan
  9. Landon
  10. Oliver

Expect at least 10 of each in your baby's classes going forward!

Names are such a complicated things, but to pick a name off the most popular name list just strikes me as lazy. Think outside the box! You may get some flak for it, but hey, it is better than being called "Big" anything.

Did you use a top name for your baby?

Yeah, my son's name is Landon, which I named him two years ago when there were none. I am so beyond annoyed that people are naming their kids this now! I know two other girls with Landon's. Annoying. My daughter is due in 3 weeks, her name is Delaney Savanah. Can't wait to see how many Delaney's we run into in the next few years.

Depends on the list you go off of. Liam wasn't on the majority of top 10 when I used it 3 years ago.

I've heard the others a bilion times, but I haven't heard of many Bailey's or Oliver's.  Weird!  I guess you have to go with a name you love, whether it's popular or not.  If we ever have a boy, he'll be Henry after my grandpa.  I've known this for years, but I see it's getting more and more popular lately.  I typically would prefer something more unique, but I wouldn't give up the name just because it might end up in the top ten.  Just personal preference, I guess.

yeah my sons name is Aiden, i had my reasons. lol. its been number one since about 2001 when sex and the city introduced Aidan Shaw Carrie's boyfriend. i think naming babies is getting out of hand. all the different spellings, naming girls boys names, naming boys girls names, stupid outrageous spellings. people need to realize that these kids have to grow up with these names and one day that name is going to be on a resume and bosses don't like weird spellings and weird names. its true and it sucks. people need to stop with it and start thinking of their children and not how "cool" and "original" names they picked

If you like a name, then go for it! I named my daughter Ashlynn in 2007. I had never heard it before. Now I see it all them time.

nope my oldest is anthony..my daughter is madalynn and my newborn is eli. i named the youngest 2 those names because they are very popular...my oldest is named after his dad.

nicol... nicole4ray

My daughters name makes the list, but I didn't know that when I fell in love with the name. I heard the name one day, fell in love with it, my husband also loved it (which never happens), so we used it. I do feel bad that she's going to deal with having a lot of other people with the same name, but there just wasn't another name for her, it fits her so well. And trust me, I know what it's like, I was once one of 6 Nicole's in a class, not fun.

I never thought that I would choose sucha popular name for my kid.  We chose the name, Amelia, for our daughter before having any clue how popular it was becoming...we didn't know anyone with that name!  I saw a list like this with it literally days before her birth and seriously wanted to change it to something else but my husband wasn't having any part of it.  It was the only name we could agree on and honestly, the fact that it has become popular was not a good enough reason to change it.

Mine are Madison and Wyatt. I had Wyatt's name picked out since I was 16...and my  husband and I came up with Madison ourselves. It wasn't popular when we picked it, but now it is.
