Now a Circumcision Ban? Stop It San Francisco!

A prison sentence for circumcising your son?

It could happen if a proposed measure on San Francisco's 2011 ballot passes.

Resident Lloyd Schofield  has proposed the new law to:

"make it a misdemeanor to circumcise, excise, cut or mutilate the foreskin, testicle or penis of another person who has not attained the age of 18."

Punishment could be as much as a $1,000 fine AND a year in prison.

WTF? Seriously. As much as I hate to use that overused acronym, that's really about all there is to say in this case.

At this point, it's just a proposal, and Schofield has to collect 7,168 signatures in order to actually get it on the ballot.

But this is San Francisco we're talking about -- home of the banned Happy Meals -- so it wouldn't be surprising AT ALL if it actually makes it. In fact, I would bet money he will at least get it on there.

Circumcision is a hot parenting topic, one of the hottest in fact.

No, it's not medically necessary, and there are a few risks. But there are some benefits too (reduced risk of STDs for one).

Those are the facts. Beyond that, it's a a deeply personal decision that parents have to make for their child. No one should be able to put them in jail for doing what they feel is right, what's been done for thousands of years.

What's next, banning little girls from getting their ears pierced? How about braces -- those are just for cosmetic purposes and can be painful? There are a million parenting decisions we make for our children each day because that's part of OUR job, not the government's job.

If someone doesn't want to circumcise their own child, fine, but to try and criminalize it for others is an infringement on the rights of parents and a ridiculous extremist approach to what should be a personal decision.

So stop it, San Francisco. Stop it before it gets on the ballot, before it has a chance of actually becoming a law. Your Happy Meal ban is bad enough, but hands off when it comes to penises.

Would you vote for a ban on circumcision?
