New Mom Secret: I Drink & Breastfeed

It's hard being a new mom (or even an experienced mom to a new baby) and sometimes we do things we know we shouldn't, despite what all the experts say. But this is a safe place to share your secrets (PM me)—we'll never tell.

This Week's Secret:

One of the things I missed most while I was pregnant was drinking. The second the baby came out, I was all about having a few margaritas, but then I started having them regularly. I'm breastfeeding my daughter and I started to notice that on days when I'd had a beer or glass of wine or drink, she slept better. So I started doing it more. Now I do it all the time. I feel bad, but it's also kind of amazing to get sleep. -- Anonymous

On first glance, I would say it's fine to drink a little and breastfeed. One glass, maybe even two, some time to let it metabolize, and then you can feed the baby. Every once in a while. Every night seems like asking for trouble.

Also, your reason is troubling. If you liked it because it relaxed you, that would be one thing, but liking it because it makes your baby sleepy? That is kind of scary.

You might want to quit for a little while. See if the sleeping thing is a placebo. Maybe she's just improving on sleep?

At any rate, feeding your baby alcohol -- no matter how you do it -- is not a good habit.

Do you have any thoughts for this mom?
