Hyland's Teething Tablet Recall Due to Toxic Ingredient

Standard Homeopathic Company is recalling their Hyland's Teething Tablets after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) became concerned about belladonna poisoning from the tablets.

Hyland’s Teething Tablets -- a homeopathic remedy for the pain of teething in babies -- are manufactured in the United States and distributed throughout North America.

The recall comes after babies have suffered "serious adverse events" including seizure, difficulty breathing, and muscle weakness.

The FDA says that these reports are "consistent with belladonna toxicity." Additionally, the tablets do not have child-proof caps and so children have been overdosing on the tablets.

The tablets are for sale in many stores, including Target, Amazon.com and many health stores.

Belladonna has been used as a medicine, cosmetic, and poison. and even as an anesthetic for surgery. It can cause a wide-range of symptoms including seizures, difficulty breathing, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty urinating, and agitation.

According to Botanical.com:

Belladonna is supposed to have been the plant that poisoned the troops of Marcus Antonius during the Parthian wars. Plutarch gives a graphic account of the strange effects that followed its use.

Not something you want your babies to be taking, eh?

If you are affected, the Hyland's website has the codes and says:

Standard Homeopathic Company is refining its production, packaging and testing protocols. Throughout the process, Standard Homeopathic Company will continue to closely monitor and evaluate the situation and consult with FDA.

Both the company and the FDA said to throw away or discard any product currently in the home and to contact the company for safe replacements.

According to the FDA release, the tablets have not been evaluated and the FDA is "not aware of any proven clinical benefit offered by the product."
