New Mom Secret: I Pretend Not to Smell Poopie Diapers

Sasha Brown-Worsham

It's hard being a new mom (or even an experienced mom to a new baby) and sometimes we do things we know we shouldn't, despite what all the experts say. But this is a safe place to share your secrets (PM me) -- we'll never tell.

This Week's Secret:

I'm with the babies all day Monday through Friday, both of whom are in diapers. My husband and I made a deal before they were born that whoever smelled the poop would change it. Sometimes I know the kids pooped and I hand them over to my husband, waiting for him to smell it. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't. I usually still wait. I feel bad about it, but I get really sick of changing four poops a day. -- Anonymous

You need to communicate with your husband.

Making a rule when you're pregnant is all fine and good, but if that rule changes, just bring it up. It may cause a fight, but a short fight is a small price to pay and what you're doing now means your child sits in a poop because you're too afraid to lay down the law.

What's a good compromise? Think about what you want.

My husband knows I change a lot of diapers when the kids are home with me, so our agreement is he takes them all when he's home. If you think another compromise might work better in your family, then try something else, but just pretending you don't smell diapers so he picks up the slack isn't doing anyone any favors.

Especially your poor baby's bum!

Do you have any advice for this mom?
