An Amish woman in Ohio went for a ride with her family, and wound up delivering her baby early after a serious buggy wreck.
Barbara Kauffman was eight months pregnant when the buggy she and her family were in was rear-ended by an SUV. Many of the family members, including Kauffman and her children, were ejected from the buggy into the street. The accident caused Kauffman to go into labor and give birth to her baby prematurely. Both Kauffman and her baby are in critical condition.
Unfortunately, it was an accident that could have been prevented, and that baby could have stayed safe in her mother's womb.
The driver of the SUV was believed to be under the influence of drugs, and was cited for following the buggy at too close range. The 31-year-old mother who was driving the SUV has minor injuries, as does her daughter who was in the car. While she was on drugs. Injuring the Amish.
I'm thinking the driver should get an even harsher punishment for not only causing a mother to deliver her baby early and sending two more of the family's children to the hospital, but being so under the influence that she hit a buggy that couldn't have whipped out in front of her without her noticing.
The Amish community, however, is typically forgiving.
The Amish say they do not like to judge others, but they wish people would show greater care when driving through their community.
"You know they were probably focusing on something else and you know accidents do happen," Troyer told Fox 8 News.

That is so sad.
Horrible. My prayers are with this woman and her baby. And I agree, that the driver of the SUV, if under drugs, should definitely be punished harshly- but that goes for anybody who drinks or does drugs than drives, esp with their own child in the car. Just completely out of line and yet another thing that makes me wonder if people should be given logic tests to become parents.
How sad and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I can't belive a mother would get behind the wheel high on drugs espcially with a child in the car. I hope that chid is taking from her.
I think the Amish Community has a tremendous ability to forgive. It truly amazes me how kind they are. Driving under the influence is not acceptable. Driving under the influence while your children are in the car and hurting others is not only horrific it deserves jail time, losing your license and parenting classes at minimum! I hope everyone will be okay.
i was going to say the same thing. she needs to have her child taken away. she put her innocent child's life at risk for her own selfish reasons. i hope the amish mother and her child live and recover. i think the mother deserves a way harder punishment. what if one of them dies? that's a slap in the face to the victims family if she only gets a citation.
Okay....what kind of drugs? I mean, was she on Vicoden, or LSD? There is a big difference to me.....
She may have been distracted by her child, or distracted by who knows what and that could have caused the accident, but if she had "drugs" in her system they will blame that. If it was an illegal drug, take her away and lock her up. If it was a prescribed medication, I don't think it is nearly as serious (although it is TERRIBLY sad that there were injuries and a premature birth due to the accident).
Accidents happen, they are sad, tragic, and mostly avoidable, but they happen.
Fox8 went to the hospital they took the woman to deliver the baby and they said they are both doing well. So that is a great thing.
I agree with MomIWant. That woman that was driving the car should no longer be permitted to drive!
so sad! Hope they are ok.
Wow. Glad they are all ok though!
