Before I had a baby of my own, I went to a baby shower where they played a game -- maybe you've played it, too? It involved diapers with smashed up chocolate candy bars inside (which looked just like poop) and the objective was to correctly guess which kind of candy was in which diaper.
All the other women held the diapers up to their noses and examined them and I was, well, DISGUSTED.
But these days? I have absolutely no problem dissecting the contents of a diaper. Even a diaper with real poop in it. It's just one of those unexpected ways that motherhood changes you.
You too might find yourself able to rattle off numerous facts about baby poop like these (and if you're lucky, winning some fabulous baby shower game gifts).
The Color: If you are breastfeeding, your baby’s stools will be mustard-colored -- but if you are formula feeding, they will be more tan-colored. Once you introduce solids, all bets are off. Expect to find colors like orange or green, and if your baby likes blueberries, black.
The Frequency: I was shocked to find out that babies can go days without pooping and this is usually nothing to worry about. Exclusively breastfed babies seem to have less constipation than formula-fed babies, which is usually because some formulas are high in iron.
The Texture: Breastfed babies have stools that are seedy and runny. Some say it's the texture of yogurt. If you're formula feeding, you'l likely see something like a peanut butter consistency.
The Blood: When Rowan was a few weeks old, I was terrified when I found red streaks inside his diaper. A trip to the doctor confirmed this can be caused by rectal fissures around the circumference of the anus. In my case it was a reaction to dairy in my diet. It's alright. I didn't need to eat all of that ice cream anyway.

Well at first it was the frequency when jake was first born and the consistancy freaked me out, it didnt look like normal poop to me lol. Now that he's 2 its the fact that he can go a couple of days without pooping and be perfectly fine
Well I have a really sensitive stomach I gag at poop and other gross smells, even just thinking about it or talking about it can send me into gag reflex mode. People told me with baby poop I'd get used to it, uhhhhh nope, no I didn't! I manage changing the diaper, gagging all the way through but anytime i can get out of it I do. Mind you I'm sure any time ANYONE can get out of changing a poopy diaper they do, sensitive stomach or not! LOL
Oh and tomatoes, tomatoes could cause it to look like there is blood in there so remember that you've fed them tomatoes before you freak out!! LOL
And sand is a very good filter and will make them poop about 10x as much as they normally would!
That exclusively breastfed baby poop can look a lot like egg yolk.....Which is unfortunate when you've just eaten a fried egg sandwich, pick your baby up, not realizing they've had a diaper blow out....and you lick your finger thinking it's egg yolk from your sandwich....then realize it's so not.... Over share?
Even though Rowan was supplemented with formula a little as a newborn (sigh), his poop was still mainly EBF poop. When a friend with a 100% formula-fed baby came over and opened his poopy diaper to change him, I was SO INSANELY SHOCKED at how bad it smelled that I wanted to tell her to do it somewhere else. I had no idea how gross it was or how different until that moment!
@PBM... um... ew. Ew ew. EW EW EW! AAAAAAH!
I know, Rana.... It was tragic.
PBM...I done that before lol. So glad she was a few days old and it didn't taste like poop LOL!
my biggest surprise was how often my son poops. just the other day he pooped three times. he is very regular. he usually has at least one poopy diaper per day. i was surprised when i started feeding him baby food at how many different colors and smells it could be.
I could never get used to those seedy breastfeeding poops. They surpirsed me every single time.
Yup the BF poops are a bit shocking. My son was a formula baby and my daughter a BF baby so I was surprised when my daughter came along. I also am still amazed at the amount of poopy diapers!
