Priest Drowns Baby During Baptism

baby dies during baptismIn a horrible story out of Moldova, a 6-week-old baby and his family went to their local priest for a baptism that turned deadly.

Baby Laurentiu Gaydeu was surrounded by 20 of his family members as the priest dunked him under the water three times. His parents noticed their baby looked unwell, but the priest dismissed any concern for the baby boy's health and continued the ceremony.

A Russian newspaper reported that as it became obvious the baby was showing no signs of life, he was rushed to a local hospital. Tragically, he was not able to be revived. The baby's parents, naturally, blame the priest.

“He dipped the baby in the water without even covering the baby's mouth with his hand to prevent him from drowning,” Mr. Gaydeu said.

Baptisms have been performed for centuries, and I can't imagine how one could go so horribly wrong. The ones I've seen for babies usually only have the officiant sprinkling water on the baby's head, but dunking is a common practice. How far under was he dunking that baby?

It's awful, no matter how exactly it happened. I do hope at the very least, the priest comes under review and is not allowed to perform anymore baptism ceremonies on babies.

Would you let your baby be dunked during a baptism?

Hell NO!  Pouring over the baby's head, marking the cross on the forehead, all of that is pretty widely accepted as baptism.  I've NEVER seen a baby dunked in all of the baptisms I've seen and I've seen them in different denominations and churches.  I wonder if he did it without thinking because he's so accustomed to doing it with older people's baptisms.  I can't imagine how that family feels.

I didnt think that when they were that young that you dunk? I thought you just pour the water over the head...

I'm wondering what sort of parents "notice their baby looked unwell" but allow the priest to continue dunking their infant in the water.  I can see how they want to blame the priest, but their hands aren't clean - they stood there and watched.  Unbelievable tragedy.

Oh my gosh!!!! That is unbelievable. I only ever heard of babies having water placed on their head when they are that tiny, never full immersion. I cannot imagine how devastated everyone involved is.

Whoa!  I have never heard of dunking a baby during a baptism.  That is just tragic.

I actually have heard of Catholic churches doing a full dunk, although I think for safety's sake it isn't often done anymore.

But then again ladies, this did take place in russia where their practices may be different.... just sayin....

If the other 20 witnessed the priest NOT covering the baby's mouth as said by the parents, they might have a case, but then again, its russia...

And look on the bright side, at least he was baptised before decending to heaven :)

I wonder how old the priest was? Was he young and inexperienced, or was he very old and maybe not quite all there? I'm Catholic (but the Eastern rite is different from the Church of Rome), and I have never seen a dunking style baptism. I know that they are done, but I have only ever witnessed water being sprinkled over the person's head.
