NASCAR's reigning champ (for four years now) Jimmie Johnson is a dad. How great for his baby girl to arrive on a Wednesday and not on race day. It's like the baby knew!
When Jimmie's wife Chandra was going to give birth was a big concern for the number 48 team ... well, apparently it was Jimmie who was the most nervous about it. Missing a race could have meant missing the Chase ... and a fifth championship.
"If she's anything like her mother," Johnson said with a straight face, "she'll be late, so I should be fine -- which puts us into the off weekend, nice and deep."
Baby girl actually came a little early. So does that mean she's going to be more like dad? Will she race cars someday?
I hope so! NASCAR needs more than a part-time Danica Patrick to race in just the Nationwide series.
I also think baby girl -- whose name is not yet known -- needs to have this onesie.
Congrats to Jimmie and Chandi!
I'm also excited for a couple of other NASCAR drivers who are on baby watch this year -- Juan Pablo Montoya is expecting his third and Jimmie's teammate (and car owner) Jeff Gordon is expecting baby number two. But this weekend, my bet would be on first-time dad Jimmie to win the race under the lights in Chicago.
