If you don't have the right diaper for swimming, it's not going to be a pretty sight if baby goes potty in the pool. And if you ever tried to let her swim with a regular diaper on, you quickly learned about diaper technology -- and how much liquid it can hold (and how disgusting the insides are when it explodes). Ick!
When I was younger, we had a small 4-foot pool and a sign hanging near it that read: We don't swim in your toilet, so please don't pee in our pool. Great saying, right? No one wants to swim in pee and no one wants to deal with the aftermath of a baby pooping in a pool. So I found these reusable swim diapers that will save the day and save the planet. No swim diapers needed -- it's all built into the suit.
Bambino Mio Swim Suit Nappy ($29.95) is a bathing suit with a built-in leak-proof diaper (shown above). So smart and eco-friendly! The company also makes bottoms only. The Bambino Mio Swim Nappy in pink ($16.98) is perfect for your baby girl to wear under her swimsuit or with a bikini top. Baby boy can wear the blue nappy alone or under his swim trunks.

The My Pool Pal Swimster Bikini ($24.95) from Swim Outlet is a great two-piece with a secure diaper bottom. They also have Boys' Ultimate Swim Diaper Trunks ($18.95) for your little man.

Girl's Swimsuit Diaper Pink Print ($8.99) from Kushies looks very retro to me -- like a '50s-style apron. I love this print with little fishes and seahorses on it. And the price! Buy two so if baby goes potty, you can just change her into a clean one. They have bottoms for boys, too. The Swimsuit Diaper Print Boat ($10.99) is my favorite.

Have you tried reusable swim diapers and swimsuits on your little one?

I found a reusable swimsuit last year at Children's Place, loved it!
I think it's neat, but I have a question.
Say that you're in a public place, like a lake or a beach, or a pool. . . .and the kid poops in his reusable diaper. If there are no immediate restrooms, where do you go to clean the swimsuit out? Do you need another "reusable" swimsuit on hand? Is fun time over, once the kid has a blowout?
We only do rashguard tops since they protect skin and have SPF in the fabric, and I was SOOOO happy when I found these:
But I wish I hadn't bought the iPlay swim diaper by itself already... but oh well, Aurora looks adorable in the shirt I'd already bought and her swim diaper. Rufflebutt!
Those are so cute, Rana!
Kellio, I would have a second suit on hand if you don't have a place to wash the suit. Or you can put baby in a diaper until you can wash it out.
That makes sense, Michele.
I guess what I'm thinking is that a one piece girl's swimsuit like the first one with built in diaper wouldn't be very practical, ESPECIALLY if you only had one swimsuit. The Bambinos with a rashguard top seems much more reasonable.
Kellio, you're going to laugh at me, but Aurora only has one swim diaper. It never occured to me she'd poop in it, LOL. So now I'm thinking I need to buy a second!
we have the last one blue, so cute!
Yes, but I find those huggies little swimmers work well.
Most swim diapers are designed to leak, i.e., your baby still pees in the pool. The object is to keep the poop from floating toward anyone else. Given that babies pee in the pool anyway, why not just use a pair of snug panties? Of course, it it's your own pool and your kid is the only one swimming in it, maybe the leak-proof ones might make a difference. But seriously, what's a little pee . . . your baby swam in a lotta pee before she was born, and it didn't kill her. She probably pees in the tub, too.
SKL: Snug panties on a baby would basically be like wearing snug mesh. The poop would go right through it. This is also the reason why babies wear diapers instead of snug panties to begin with.
