It's hard being a new mom (or even an experienced mom to a new baby) and sometimes we do things we know we shouldn't, despite what all the experts say. But this is a safe place to share your secrets—we won't tell.
This Week's Secret:
I work outside the home for a variety of reasons, but one reason is that we truly need my income. It covers all those annoying things such as our mortgage and our car payment and our electricity bill.
Although I know plenty of parents who have worked up impressive budgets in order for one parent to stay home, it's just not something my family can swing right now.
But, if we could afford for me to stay home, I think I'd still prefer to work. There are times when I feel guilt over this, and in those moments, I find myself envying my stay-at-home-mom friends -- not because their financial situations allow them to stay home, but because their situations allow them to stay home and they willingly chose that option.
These friends enjoy being home all day (every day!) with their kids. And even though I imagine life isn't always easy or stress-free for them, staying home is what they prefer.
I occasionally wonder what's wrong with me because I prefer something different. I love being a mother, but I also love having a job outside the home that doesn't require diaper changes or nap schedules. I like adult interaction that doesn't revolve around the best baby toys. I enjoy working, and if I didn't have to, I still would.
Our financial situation is what it is, and I don't resent it or dwell on it much, but I do beat myself up from time to time because I'm the kind of mother who thrives on time away from home.
Do you enjoy working outside the home?
