No, the child should not be taken away based on this one photo or even if the parents smoke MJ. Should CPS even be called, doubt it. There are too many times we jump to conclusions with one photo or one persons word or story. If we are to believe in one photo or the word of one person, then anyone can whip out a photo of any child when happy. While the same child may be dead on the floor from that parents hand and say, 'oops'...wasn't me. Decisions on when to call or not CPS, which is an overburdened, under educated, under supervised, and underfunded service should be based on a multitude of things not just one. And, though there are Good Foster homes...The ones that are not, the times kids are placed with abusers/pedophiles, etc. those are the ones we hear about Sometimes. A lot more go unpunished due to disbelief or no social worker check. What may be better spent, time and dollar wise, is parenting classes, anger management classes, drug rehab for those in those situations. I dream, I know of an adult society, taking care of its own rather than punishing only. Nowhere do people learn about becoming 'adults' and 'parents'. You are taught how to do math and read. This knowing a child knows nothing of how to do either. But, once we are a magical age, 18, we are supposed to be adult enough to marry and bare children and KNOW how to do both. We live in a bizarre Fantasy Land.

If you call Child Welfare and tell them that there is "drug abuse" going on in a home, they will tell you plainly (in letter form, several weeks later) that this does not meet the requirements for intervention. CPS is not a law-enforcement agency, and one need not follow the law in order to be a parent. You can do drugs in front of your kids and still provide a good home for your kid. People here can make all the value judgments you want about them, but the bottom line is that drug abuse is intrinsically neither abuse nor neglect. That's not my opinion, that's the way the law is. In a way, it's comforting that people are calling for CPS involvement. It probably means that you can't even conceive of the horrible situations they're actually called to investigate.

If she can get in trouble for this kid having a shaped piece of glass thats has no fire then Parents who smoke ciggarettes who leave thier ashtray with ciggarette butts in them and your kid gets a hold of them should also get in trouble considering one drop of liquid nicotine can kill a grown man in a matter of minutes.Me i know a lot of people who smoke and kids getting into the ashtray or grabbing your pack of smokes and breaking them happens all the time. If there were no words scribbled on a piece of paper saying what marijuana is illegal then this would be no big deal.Plus without a lighter or it being lit the (bong) is just a piece of glass.

there is no guarantee that the foster home would be all candy and roses for this child, BUT, it is a guarantee that the home he is in is NOT...and if this is what we are allowed to see of her home I cannot imagine what we don't have photos of. Everybody knows that what is shown to the public is only a small bit of the reality...whether it is good or bad, behind closed doors is always different.

I'm probably alone on this one.. but I didn't find this too disturbing until I read that it was tobacco.

It's no worse than the moms who dress their young daughters up like prostitutes and parade them in front of sickos posing as "judges" to rate them on their appearance and beauty. Guaranteed the child hitting the bong in the picture will grow up with more marbles than the ones who just don't quite cut it in the pageant world. I am also compelled to mention the countless children that the modern day psychiatric industry has doped up on Adderall and other stimulant-type drugs to keep them "calm" and "compliant", especially as they attend the halls of indoctrination sometimes referred to as "school".

There are always so many idiots on these forums... "It's a bong! She therefore must have a drug problem! That poor child! Take him away from that horrid mother! She must be an abusive parent too!" Are you guys serious? Do you not understand how stupid you all sound? One photograph is not enough to make such a harsh judgement and shouldn't be enough to destroy a family! Don't tell me your children never touched a hot stove, picked up a sharp knife, played with a light socket, ever had a beer or glass of wine around your kids, etc. If you said yes to any of these, then you're all horrible parents for allowing that to happen and should have had your children ripped from you home and thrown into the foster system ASAP and you should never have been allowed to see them again! It's a glass bong. Get over it. Tobacco smoking in a bong is considerably cheaper than buying a pack of cigarettes. Yeah, mom was an idiot for posting something like that on Facebook, but that does not mean she is a bad mother. The kid is chubby, meaning he's well fed. His t-shirt isn't ripped or severely stained, so he's well looked after. There are no bruises or scratches on his body, so he isn't being beaten. She should have to take a few parenting class, and few visits from the proper authorities to the home, maybe a fine, but that's it. The child is safe, and isn't ill, so let it be.
