Planning a nursery for twins to share can seem more than twice as complicated as planning a room for one. Here, a nursery designer explains what's most important in creating a bedroom that will be safe and comfy for twin babies. And she and moms share their favorite twin-centric decor ideas for finishing it off beautifully.

Layout Is Most Important

"Twin nurseries can be a challenge because there's more furniture than a single child's nursery and more safety concerns. It is not advised that cribs are pushed together or are touching other furniture -- or are separated by a small trap-hazard space. The best way to start is by laying out potential furniture in a floor plan. Once you are happy with how it will fit, the fun begins!

"Don't feel that because it's one room you can only pick one color scheme. If you want each child to have their own distinct side, I suggest you keep it looking cohesive: Mirror image the layout on either side using the same items and patterns and just varying the colors." -- Vanessa Antonelli, nursery, playroom, and kids' space designer and proprietor of Nessalee Baby

Noah's Ark Theme

"We did a Noah's Ark theme and decorated with animals. Remember how the animals boarded the ark two by two!"

Pirates and Mermaids

"You could do pirates and mermaids -- half the room would be decorated with each, but it still all goes together."

Dr. Seuss Decor

"How about a room decorated with One Fish, Two Fish -- or Thing 1 and Thing 2?"

Designate Personal Spaces With Names

"I decorated the walls with the twins' names. We put a crib under each name with monkey-themed bedding."
