It's all too common for babies to suffer from gas pains, in great part because they have so many opportunities to swallow excess air. Think crying, sucking on a pacifier, or swallowing air bubbles from a bottle. Thankfully, if your little one is struggling with uncomfortable gas, there are tried-and-true tips you can use.

Burp Often & Consider Your Diet

"When feeding a bottle, be sure to keep the baby's head elevated and make sure that the nipple is filled completely with liquid. You may also use a bottle that minimizes air bubble formation. Burp the baby frequently to allow a release of air up and out of the stomach. If you are breastfeeding, you may check with your physician about things in your diet that may be contributing to your baby's gassiness. You may try over-the-counter simethicone drops for gas, but there is no proven evidence...

Gripe Water's a Great Go-To

"Gripe water is a mix of water and herbs, and two of the most common components are dill seed oil and sodium bicarbonate. Both are supposed to soothe a baby's stomach. I swear by it, but just be sure not to give your baby more than the recommended amount or there can be side effects."

Have Your Baby 'Ride a Bike'

"Put your baby on his back and manipulate his legs to make circular motions like he's riding a bike. It helps let out the gas."

Try a Warm Bath or Knee Bends

"I would give my son a warm bath in a baby tub. I would also lie him on his left side and rub his belly while gently pushing his knees up and towards his torso. My son had a lactose issue as a baby, and the leg exercises really helped!"

Rub vs. Pat When Burping

"One of the best tricks I read was rubbing versus patting. Hold the baby against your chest facing you, like you would normally hold them to burp them, but instead of patting, rub your open hand firmly against their back, starting at the bottom and going up. Keep doing that over and over. I don't know why it works, but it always did the trick for both of my newborns."
