Photographers have different styles, levels of experience, and training. Here's how pros themselves -- and moms, too! -- advise you scout out a photographer who's the right fit for your family.

Find One Trained in Newborn Safety

"Please be sure to do your research and hire an experienced newborn photographer! Poses can be very dangerous if the photographer is not a seasoned professional, and you risk injuring your precious new baby if a less experienced photographer attempts complicated poses. You can find photographers who are trained in newborn safety through a simple Google search, or just ask them when you're going through their portfolios." -- Laura Stennett, Laura Stennett Photography, Anchorage, Alaska

Do Your Research

"You should always check out a photographer's profile on social media, as well as their own site, before hiring them. You'll want to get a sense of the different work they've done. If they aren't willing to share a portfolio, don't hire them." -- Jeanne Sager, Jeanne Sager Photography, Sullivan County, New York

Get Recommendations From Friends

"I asked friends. There actually aren't many newborn photographers in my city (LA) so it was easy to find one!"

Ask Local Moms

"Ask moms in your neighborhood for recommendations on a family photographer. Chances are they are great at photographing newborns, toddlers, and families!"

Go on Social Media

"Poke around a bit on Instagram! Sometimes you can search local hashtags and see lots of photos and then pick out whose style you like best. I personally like photos that don't look stiff and posed, that feel more natural and show the family's personalities."

Facebook Is Priceless

"Check with connections in Facebook groups! Even in ones that aren't, say, geared toward your town or city, there may be moms who are from your area who have photographer suggestions!"
